CONSIDERATION OF ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE BURLINGAME HIGH
SCHOOL AQUATIC CENTER PROJECT
City Manager's memo of January 7 , 1999 recommended council authorize an additional contribution
of $166,695 toward the construction of the BHS Aquatic Center. Funds would be transferred from
an existing SF PUC Right of Way Capital Project. On January 5 the high school district opened
bids on the Aquatic Center. Four bids were received and the low bid was $1,350,000. The total
project costs based on the low bid exceed the project budget by $248,695. In reviewing the bid
breakdown, over $188,000 of the excess costs are for the building portion with is 80-90 percent for
the city's benefit. Since the high school district is scheduled to award the project on January 14 and
we wish to avoid further delay to the project, he recommended the additional contribution.
Councilman Spinelli questioned the bid breakdown price for "walls" costing $85,000. Councilman
Galligan reviewed the mathematics of project and interest earned on the contribution of $1 million
the city made last year. Mayor Janney hoped we could move ahead with the project.
Councilman Galligan moved to approve a donation of $166,695 for the high school Aquatic Center
project. Seconded by Councilman Spinelli and carried 3-1-1 on voice vote, Councilwoman
O'Mahony absent and Vice Mayor Knight abstaining because she lives in close proximity to the
project site.
San Mateo Union High School District Superintendent Tom Mohr was present; he expressed
gratitude for the support given to the school district by the city council.
