An ordlna.nce regulating taxi comi:a.nies was prexented to the
Counell for lts eonsideration. Attorney Carl Anderson represent-ing taxl eompanies spoke ln favor of the ordinance decla-ring that
same had been patterned after llke ordlna.nces in San Francisco,
San fllateor and Palo Alto and would place regulation entirel-y inthe hands of the Council and rrgspsil some of the weakness ln theexlstlng ordlnance. ObJection v,,as voiced by Mayor Hunt v,'ho
expressed fears that it might create a monol:oly. Councilman Buck
v{as of the oplnlon t}rat the rlght to llmit the type of any
business such as ls embodied 1n the ordinance would be questionable.
Acting Attorney Karmel asserted that present ordi-nance vri&s ad-
equate at tirls time for all ;oraetical purpose v;ith lrossibly ttre
exeeptlon tirat closer scrutiny be given by tire ito1lce. He recom-
mended against suetr an elaborate ordlnance as presented feelingit was not neeessary. Attorney Anderson was of the opinlon tiratcloser study of proposecl oroinance ,aould remove many doubts nowexisting and urged tnat such be done. A motlon to thls effect
was offered by Councilman lYa-rd and seconded by Couneilman
MeDonald. fn secondlng Mr, McDonald stated he vias strongly ofthe opinion tha.t taxis now in business should be accorded
adequate proteetlon without unneeessary hardshlps as long asthey are complylng wlth the leiws of the Clty. The motion wasearrled, all voting AYE. '
Attorney Karmel reported receivlng service from the Paclfic
Telegraph and Telephorre Company regarding test suit i-n
Appelate Court relatlve to dlseriminating taxation.
An applleation from the Union 011 Company for another entranceoff El Camino Real south of Broadway was granted. ActingClty .Attorney Karme1 was lnstructed to prepare an ordinance re*
moving restrlctlons entirely from 0rdlnance No. 286 to so
permlt o11 statlons on E1 Camino Real and Bayshore Boulevard to
come within the scope of qualiflcations as noted above,
