AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING MINIMUM DIMENSIONS
Section 1. Section 25.70.020 of the Burlingame
Municipal Code regarding dimensions of parking spaces, aisles
and driveways is amended to read as follows:
"25.70.020 Dimensions of parking spaces,
aisles and driveways
A. Parking Spaces
The following are established as minimum parking
space dimensions:.
(1) Open parking spaces, garages or carports, except
when a lesser dimension is hereinafter allowed,
shall be nine feet (9') in width and twenty feet
(20!) in length.
(2) Garages and carports for single-family dwellings shall
be ten feet (10') in width and twenty feet (20') in
length.
(3) Compact car spaces, where allowed, shall be eight
feet (B') in width and seventeen feet (
17') in length.

bordered in whole or part by a structure, wall or
fence along one or both sides of the space.
(5) Parking spaces confined along two sides shall be
eleven feet (11') in width.
(6) A column may project not more than six inches (6")
into any parking space and shall not interfere with
opening of car doors or with car turning movements.
(7) Any
parking space
dimension shall
be
increased
to a
size
acceptable to
the Department
of
Public
Works

if more than five (5) vehicle movements are required
to enter or exit the space.
(8) All parking spaces shall have an unobstructed vertical
clearance of seven (7) feet.
B. Aisles
Required parking spaces shall open directly upon an
aisle of -the following minimums;
(1) A thirteen foot (13') wide aisle shall be provided
for forty-five degree (45°) parking.
(2) An ei-ghteen foot (18') wide aisle shall be provided
for sixty degree (60°) parking.
(3) A twenty-four foot (24') wide aisle shall be provided
for ninety degree (90°) parking.
(4) Where parking is provided parallel with the entrance
driveway, and where a second aisle at right angles
to the first is not available for regular use of such
parallel spaces, aisle width shall be increased to
twenty-eight feet (28') for a minimum aisle length
of twenty-seven feet (27'); the minimum width of park-
ing spaces with ingress and egress from such an aisle
may be reduced by six inches (6") from the minimum
elsewhere required.
(5) A separate means of egress shall be provided for
all parking spaces at angles less than ninety degrees
(90°) unless an area is provided on site which allows
a motor vehicle exiting said spaces to do so within
three (3) movements. A turning radius of twenty-
eight feet (28') for outside clearance and fourteen
feet (14') for inside clearance shall be assumed.
(6) Aisles with traffic moving in two directions shall
be not less than eighteen feet (18') wide.
(7) All aisles, shall have an unobstructed vertical
clearance of seven feet (7').
C. Driveways
Driveways are the entrance into parking spaces or a
parking faci]-ity from a public street or other traveled
way.
A11 driveways shall

(2) Egress into a public right-of-way shall be in the
forward direction, except that backing into a public
right-of-way shall be allowed for single-family homes
or duplexes.
(3) Maximum driveway slopes sha7..1 not exceed fifteen
per cent (15%) at any point without special approval
of the Department of Public Works; slopes in excess
of twenty per cent (20°) shall require
approval of
the Planning Commission. Transitional slopes are
required for all driveways which exceed a ten per
cent (1
00) maximum slope. No transitional slope
shall .extend into a required parking space.
(4) A seven foot (7') minimum vertical clearance, measured
at right angles to
the
slope, shall. be
maintained at
all points on the
driveway.
However,
a knockout bar
with not less than
six
feet nine inches
(6' 911)
vertical clearance
may
be installed at
each entry or
exit point with permission
of the Department
of
Public Works.

(5) A six inch (6') rise above curb grade shall be
nstailed at the property line for flood protection
when required by the Department of Public Works."
Section 2. Subsections (k) and (1) are hereby added
to Section 25.70.030 to read as follows:
"(k) Parking of one car behind another (tandem
parking) will not be considered in the computation of
required parking, but additional tandem par. king spaces
in excess of code requirements will be permitted.
(1) Compact car spaces shall be allowed within
industrial and commercial districts in the following
ratio:

Compact car spaces shall be clearly marked `-SMALL
CAR ONLY.' Such spaces shall be distributed throughout
the parking area."
