PLANNING DEPT•
Qn C)ctotr 16, 20Q6, we met at the abave site along with the Burlingame art►rist, Nlr.
Steve Porter, and the project fareman, Mr. CIifF Raines. The reason for this meeting was
to discuss potential impact to tte eacisting redwcds fram proprsi constructian.
Each lot will hve its own set of potentsal impacts frtm ccavatio€ for driveways,
utalities, and stump removal, Each lot wi{( be addressecl separately with
recammenciatxtns to help mitigate patential impacts.
LoT 10:
This is th ncrth lct and ntrth af th retiwoods. ot ulities are prrposed to go along
th north side weil outside the driplines of fihe reciwcaods, about 3Q fet away. This will
have lifle or no irnpacts to any of the redwaods.
Lot 10 has an old tree stump in the middle, north of the redwoods. A tractar can pull
ot this stump if it is pulleci ncrthward, away from the reciwcds, with the tractor north
of the stump. This will signifiicantly eeduce potential impacts ta any reciwood roots.
L4T 9:
This lot is sauth and wesfi of the rciwocxf. Potential imacts at this ime are from the
proposd driveway and utility trenching. The utility trench is to ga along the south
property fine, abaut 30 feet from the redwoods, There will be litt(e ar no irnpacks.

The more critical are wi11 be excavat'ron for the driveway. A standard driveway prafile
requires 1 inches cf mfieriafs, i.e. rock, sand, pavers. To determine hw dep
driveway excavation can safely go befare hitting roots, a trench, 18 to 20 inches deep,
was dug along the noth edge of the proposed driveway.
1537 Drake Ave. (lots 9& 10}, Buriingame - 2-

A trench was dug from the sidewalk westward to the nartheast front corner of the
proposd garage. The nearest redwcod is about 15 feet away. Roots 2 inches in
diameter ard larger were not cut and their dimeters and iocations were noted.
iametrs were taken at the north edge of the trench and their depths were taken at
the sauh site af the trenh. The distance to the nearest redwood is at (east 20 feefi
except for raot #5, which is about 15 feet.
Five roats were fourtd in fihe upper 12 inches of the trench. att numbers are from
east ta west and diameters were estimated using a tape measure.

The large woociy grawth (see phatognph) from a redwood root has en ecposed. It is
somewhat loosely attached and wiil break or ct off easily without damage to fihe tree.
durin csure of the woody growth, a i-inch root was found, root #5, which is 12
inches elcw the existing grade.
To ccndude, the depth cf driveway eccavatio depends on the shalowet root(s}.
These are #2 and #4, which are 9 inches deep. I think a 7-inch cut could be done
withcut neountering large roots. A little deeper could be dane near the eacisting
sidewalk where the driveway is to start. This appears to then allaw for a gdua! ratse
up to the garage.
Please call with any questions. I think this report is accurate and is based on saund

The Enginerin Division %as reeeiveci several letters re;.rding th; sewer rnaitts on Drake
Avenue. We are aware afthe problem that occurreci in this area last year. To solve this problem,
the City reconstructed four laterals that had problems and removed tree roots from the sewer
main.
The existing sewer does not fave any capacity problems, 2owever it had tree raots wiiich eaused
abstruction of flows in the sewer main. Due ta the shaliow depth of the sewer znain in the street,
properties with plumbing fictures ielw the sireet tevel have to instali a tackflow valve in thir
private pmrty to prevent any gassible back up of sewage.
The City has removed the tr raots frozn the sewer mai, hovvever these tree roots witt
eventually grav baek causig probletns. Trefore thrs sewer znain is an te Gity list offreqenl

SU'31ECT: Sewer Backup Probtem at ISC1t} Blcack of Drake Avenue
This is ta respond to the concerns raised by ihe public during a lune 24' Planning Cornmission
meeting regarding the existing sewer system at 15Qi} btack of 17raic Avenue. 'The agiicant has
conducted a sewer study reently and ttze sewer flow maniiorng resuits showeci that the exisking
pipe size is at a problem. The wec backup problem was the result of the tre-rtat intrusion,
sags in the gipe, and the age of the pipe.
The City has taken the foliowing immediate measures to renedy the problem:
Placed this lin an the MonthIy Frequent Maintenance Program, The 5ewer Deartment
wili clean this line manthly teginning September to clean the grase and debris.
Treat this line with cliernicat foam far ree-rQot contrtl. In August, 2(?02, a City ccntracttr
witi irject ctiernzcal foam intn the sewer tnain to kili the tree roots within the pipeiines.
This treatment wiil prevent raot intrusion for the next 2 years.
The City will conduet a study of the iine to anatyze the problems and corne up with a long trm
solution. Once a feasible soiutio is dveloed a cost estivaate u I' be preared ad this project.
wili be inciuded inta the next year capital improvement pragram subject to City Council's
approval.
