Dear City of Burlingame,
Planning Division
We are applying for a permit for the proposed fence on Easton. The fence is
replacing a 14-foot tall by 6-foot wide ivy hedge that was badly overgrown and
encroaching on the sidewalk. This hedge was approximately 80 foot long and
was housing multiple rats prior to its removal.
Our property is unique in that it is a corner lot with the rear of our house being on
Easton and the front of the house on Jackling. It is essentially a wedge lot. The
rear of the house (Easton side) has all of our bedrooms and is approximately 9
feet from the fence. We have 2 young children and did not feel the hedge
provided adequate safety or privacy for us. We felt it necessary to remove the
hedge and install a secure fence. The fence has also cleared the sidewalk for
pedestrians. We have heard from multiple neighbors about how happy they are
the hedge is gone and they can walk freely on Easton.
This fence does not create any public hazard or endanger public health. It is
much safer and easier for the public to walk on the sidewalk by the property now.
Our neighbors are not materially affected as the new fence actually creates better
sight lines for them since it is much shorter then the prior hedge. It does not
materially affect any neighboring structure/property since the fence runs parallel
to Easton. The fence stops about 40 feet before the intersection of Easton and
Jackling, it is my understanding that 15 feet is the minimum code requirement.
The replacement of the Ivy hedge with the redwood fence was built to secure the
property for the safety of our family. It does not materially affect any neighbor and
is creates a clear path for pedestrians on Easton. I have pictures of the prior
hedge if requested by the city.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Tony and Kelsey Tognetti
