AMENDMENT TO MASTER SIGN PROGRAM AND SIGN EXCEPTION
Amendment to Master Sign Prngram and Sign Exception for Height and Area
on a Secondary Frontage at Embassy Suites
Address: 150 Anza Boulevard Meeting Date: 12/9/96
Request: Amendment to master sign program and sign exception to add an illuminated cabinet sign to
the bay side of the hotel (secondary frontage) at 150 Anza Boulevard, zoned C-4 (CS 22.20.030, 040,
060). Sign exception is required for height and area. on a secondary frontage.

not limited to: (a) On premise signs.
Summary: The applicant is asking to add one illuminated cabinet sign to the north side of the hotel at
150 Anza Boulevard (currently Embassy Suites). The north side of the hotel faces San Francisco Bay
and is considered a sacondary frontage, which allows 2 signs and 75 SF of sign area. The applicant is
requesting one sign with 96 SF of sign area. The proposed sign exceeds allowable height (84' where
no signs are allowed above the fourth floor), and area (96 SF of sign area where 75 SF is allowed).
There is an approved master signage program for this site. A summary of the existing signs with respect
to the number, area and height, as approved by the master signage program is included for reference.
If approved the applicant would add the proposed sign to the master signage program.
There are seven existing signs on the site, all of which are to remain. The sign program approved in
1991 allowed 8 signs totaling 1049 SF (see Table A for 1991 approved sign program). On the primary
frontage, there are six signs: two double faced pole signs sharing one pole, 24'-0" high (2 X 96 SF =
192 SF; 2 X 48 SF = 96 SF)(4 signs); one 84' high 99 SF wall sign (Logo & Embassy Suites); and a
14' high 38 SF awning sign (Bobby McGee's). On the secondary frontage facing 800 Airport Boulevard
there is now one sign: a 98' high, 139 SF wall sign (Logo & Embassy Suites). There were no signs
approved for the other secondary frontages in the master signage program. All seven of these signs are
to remain.

SIGN EXCEPTION 150 Anza Boulevard
The existing signs in the 1991 master sign program have been subsequently modified by changes to copy
approved in March of 1996, which resulted in lesser square footage. While the 1991 sign program
permitted 8 signs totaling 1049 SF, the current signage consists of 7 signs totaling 564 SF. The new
sign will increase the total sign square footage to 660 SF. The attached Table B details the existing and
proposed signs.
History:
In 1991, Commission approved a master sign program and sign exception for the number, height and
area of signs at this site. That master sign program allowed 8 signs and 1049 SF of sign area (see Table
A attached).
Since that time, the hotel name has changed from Crown Sterling Suites to Embassy Suites. In March
of 1996, the Planning Department allowed a change of copy for the name change on existing signs A,
B and C. The change of copy resulted in a net decrease of sign azea (from 1049 SF total to 583 SF) as
noted in the attached Table B. This reduction includes a 6 SF awning sign which has been removed.
On the primary frontage, the master sign program approved in 1991 permitted 7 signs on the primary
frontage, where the zoning code allows 2 signs, a sign 84' high on the primary frontage where the
zoning code allows no signs above the fourth floor, and allowed 766 SF of sign area, where the zoning
code allows a maximum of 200 SF. On the secondary frontage facing 800 Airport Boulevard, the 1991
master sign program permitted a 98' high wall sign, where the zoning code allows no signs above the
fourth floor. This request would amend this master sign program to allow a 98' high, 283 SF wall sign
on the secondary frontage facing the San Francisco Bay, where the zoning code allows no signs above
the fourth floor, and limits signs on a secondary frontage to a total of 75 SF.
Staff Comments: The City Engineer, Chief Building Inspector, and Fire Marshall had no comments.
