City Engineer Longson presented tentative plans for the development of an
alleyway and parking area in the Burlingame Avenue business district, which he explained
is intended to be included in an assessment district comprised of the properties to be
benefited by these facilities. Mr. Longson stated he believer it has been pretty well
established that the original plan for a system of alleyways and parking lots for the
Burlingame Avenue and Broadway business districts would be too expensive and that the
assessments that would be required to carry out the program would exceed the permissible
limit. Mr. Longson expects to have the new plans completed at, an early date.,
Louis T. Chess, Chairman of the American Legion Committee for Post -War Memorials,
was present for the purpose of addressing the meeting on the subject of the committee pro-
gram in support of the construction of memorial buildings in the several supervisorial
districts of San Mateo County. Mr. Chess explained that the committee of which he is
Chairman is ,in favor of the construction of community buildings in each of the princi-
pal population centers of the county, including the coast side, and that for Burlingame
they advocate a three -cities group composed of San Mateo, Burlingame, and Hillsborough
in some suitable location, on which they desire to construct a. building to cost $250,000
with an auditorium containing a dance floor, smaller assembly rooms and catering facili-
ties for the use of the veterans and various other organizations, including the Boy
Scouts, Red Cross, and so forth, - such a building to stand as; a memorial to war veterans.
Colonel Felix*LaCrosse, Chairman of the War Memorial Committee! of Half Moon Bay, was
present and was introduced by Commissioner Rapp.
After the address of Mr. Chess, there was some discussion of the details of the
program, and S. Abbott, Chairman of the Burlingame Recreation Commission, and the members
of the Planning Commission, indicated that the facilities which would be provided by tuch
a building would be desirable for the community. After due consideration the commission
approved the program in general. Mr. Abbott indicated that he would like to be on record
that he would speak for the Burlingame Recreation Commission as likewise being in favor
of the project.
Chairman Mitchell brought up the subject of tree planting and pruning of trees
in the street parking areas of the city. The mention of this subject created considerable
discussion bringing out the fact that there appears to be no authority vested in the city
authorities giving any control over this work. Mr. Franchard, assistant to Park Superin-
tendent Anderson, was present - Mr. Anderson being absent on account of illness. Mr.
