Request: Sign Exception for sign area and height for change of
copy to non-conforming pole sign (formerly Jenn-Air).
The sign code states that a change of text on a non-
conforming sign shall be reviewed as if it were a new
installation, therefore the sign exception is required
(CS 22.08.030).

Summary: Curt D. Schulze, representing Schulze Manufacturing, is
requesting a sign exception for sign area and height to reface a
non-conforming pole sign at 1601 Adrian Road, zoned M-1. Schulze
is a metal working company specializing in metal stamping. Its
business headquarters are at 50 Ingold Road. The company is
leasing the site for a period of 2-4 years for its assembly and
shipping location.
The existing double-sided pole sign was approved by the Planning
Commission as a sign permit in 1974 for the Amana Company (prior to
our current sign code). The existing siqn would be refaced with
the Schulze logo, which alone is 71.5 SF; the total sign area per
side is 225.5 SF. The sign height would remain at 35' (the maximum
height allowed for a pole sign is 20' (CS 22.22.060).

SIGN EXCEPTION
Findinqs for a sign Exception:
In order to prevent or lessen practical difficulties and
unnecessary hardship inconsistent with the objectives of the Sign
Code, the Planning Commission may grant exception from the
regulations relating to height, area, location or number of signs,
if each of the following is found to apply (CS 22.06.110 a-b):
(a) any exception granted shall be subject to such conditions as
will assure the adjustment thereby authorized shall not
constitute a grant of special privilege inconsistent with the
limitations upon other properties in the vicinity and district
in which the subject property is situated; and
(b) because of special circumstances applicable to the subject
property, including size, shape, topography, street frontage,
location or surrounding land use; the size or height of the
building on which the sign is to be located; the classifica-
tion of the street or highway on which the sign is located or
designed primarily to be viewed from, or the strict
application of zoning regulations is found to deprive subject
property of privileges enjoyed by other properties in the
vicinity and under identical zone classification.
Planning Commission Action:
The Planning Commission should hold a public hearing. Affirmative
action should be by resolution and should include findings made for
the exception requested. Reasons for any action should be clearly
stated. At the public hearing the following conditions should be
considered:
l. that the project shall be built as shown on the plans submit-
ted to the Planning Department and date stamped April 7, 1993
and
2. that the project shall meet all Uniform Building and Uniform
Fire Code requirements as amended by the City.

We hope to be granted approval to repaint the "Jenn-Air" sign with our "Schulze" logo.
We are leasing 1601 Adrian Road for a 2-4 year period and need identification of our
new site. Our headquarters remain at 50 Ingold Road where we have been located
since 1969. The existing pole sign is larger and taller than we require but it is the
properry of the landlord, DeVincenzi Profit Sharing Trust, and must either be painted out
to cover the Jenn-Air logo or used to identify our shipping location.
We plan to cover only 71 z square feet of each side of the sign face with our
identification to conform with the current sign allowance.
We certainly hope our Burlingame neighbors will permit the best use of an existing
structure.

The CITY OF BIIRLINGAME PLANNING COMMISSION announces the
following public hearing on Monday, the i0th day of May, 1993, at
7:30 P.M. in the City Hall Council Chambers located at 501 Primrose
Road, Burlingame, California. A copy of the application and plans

RESOLUTION NO.
RESOLUTION APPROVING CATEGORICAL EXEMPTION AND SIGN EXCEPTION
RESOLVED, by the Planning Commission of the City of Burlingame that:
WHEREAS, a categorical exemption has been proposed and application
has been made for a sign exception for sign area and height for change of
copy to nonconforming pole sign at 1601 Adrian Road (APN 025-262-350�;
(propertv owner: DeVincenzi Metal Products Profit 230 Adrian Road
Millbrae. CA 94030 ); and
WHEREAS, said matters were heard by the Planning Commission of the
City of Burlingame on __ Mav l0, 1993 , at which time it reviewed
and considered the staff report and all other written materials and
testimony presented at said hearing;
NOW, THEREFORE, it is RESOLVED and DETERMINED by this Planning
Commission that:
l. On the basis of the Initial Study and the documents submitted
and reviewed, and comments received and addressed by this commission, it
is hereby found that there is no substantial evidence that the project
set forth above will have a significant effect on the environment, and a
categorical exemption, Sec. 15301 - Class 1 minor exterior alterations
(signs), is hereby approved.
2. Said sign exception is approved, subject to the conditions set
