RE: FYI - REVISIONS TO EXTERIOR MATERIALS FOR AN APPROVED
APPLICATION FOR DESIGN REVIEW FOR A NEW, TWO-STORY
RESIDENCE AT 1036 (1032) CABRILLO AVENUE, ZONED R-1.
History: On March 10, 2003, the Planning Commission approved a mitigated negative declaration
and design review application for a new, two-story residence with a detached garage on a creek side
lot at 1036 Cabrillo Avenue (new address 1032 Cabrillo Avenue), zoned R-1. The applicant
obtained building permits and the residence is currently under construction. After consulting with an
architect that specializes in period architecture, the applicant proposed to make several exterior
changes to the dwelling to enhance the proposed Arts and Crafts style. These revisions were
reviewed by the Planning Commission as an FYI item on October 14, 2003 (October 14, 2003 P.C.
Minutes), and included the following:
• a wider exterior window and door trim that is characteristic of Craftsman architecture
added throughout the house, including corner caps;
� a new window added at the second floor, right side of the front elevation;
• the approved round columns supporting the entry arbor changed to square columns with
stone pier bases;
• fish scale shingles will be added at the large first and second floor windows to the right of
the entry; and
• the front door detail will be changed to incorporate sidelights, a new door, and a cross
beam on the arbor just above the door.
The Commission noted that there were inconsistencies between the color rendering and the building
elevations submitted, specifically regarding the right side framing members shown on the rendering.
The Commission suggested that this item brought back as an FYI item with the inconsistencies
corrected and with all elevations correctly represented. Since there were no concems expressed with
the revisions, the applicant was allowed to make the changes during construction and bring the
corrected plans back to the Planning Commission when they were complete.

The applicant submitted revised building elevations, date stamped December 31, 2003. The revised
plans include all four building elevations and corrections to the inconsistencies. If the Commission
feels there is a need for more study, this item may be placed on an action calendar for additional
review and/or public hearing with direction to the applicant.

Commissioners stated that there were inconsistencies between the color rendering and the building

would like this item brought back as an FYI item with the inconsistencies corrected and need more
than one elevation, need all elevations correctly represented.
