RESOLUTION URGING THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA
AND SOUTHERN PACIFIC TRANSPORTATION
COMPANY TO OPEN THE OLD DUMBARTON BRIDGE TO
RAILWAY TRAFFIC ON AN EMERGENCY BASI
RESOLVED, by the CITY COUNCIL of the CITY OF
BURLINGAME, County of San Mateo, State of California, that
WHEREAS, an earthquake, commencing on October 17,
1989, at 5:04 p.m., has caused conditions of extreme peril
to the safety of persons and property within this County;
and
WHEREAS, an earthquake has either damaged or
threatened to damage the major highways, freeways, bridges
and connectors within the Bay Area; and
WHEREAS, the Bay Bridge, a major link to the East
Bay, has been closed and may remain closed for at least
three months pending repairs; and
WHEREAS, as a result of the Bay Bridge closure,
congestion has and will dramatically increase on the
southern bay crossings to San Mateo County and connecting
freeways; and
WHEREAS, this condition has made transportation
difficult in and through San Mateo County, particularly for
those Bay Area and County residents who need access to San
Francisco and the East Bay; and
WHEREAS, safe and adequate transportation
connectors are vital to both the public safety and economic
well-being of San Mateo.County and the entire Bay Area; and
WHEREAS, the old Dumbarton railroad bridge still
exists between San Mateo County and the East Bay although
the bridge is not currently in use; and
WHEREAS, with some effort, the State of
California and Southern Pacific Transportation Company
could make this railroad bridge operational for railway
passenger use on an emergency basis; and
WHEREAS, this railroad bridge would provide one
more important transportation connection for San Mateo and
Bay Area residents to help alleviate traffic congestion
pending the repair of the Bay Bridge and other important
highways.
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED by the CITY
COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BURLINGAME, that:
1. The CITY COUNCIL hereby urges the State of
California and Southern Pacific Transportation Company to
open the Dumbarton Railroad Bridge on an emergency basis
and to do whatever is necessary to make the railway
connection between San Mateo County and the East Bay fully
operational as soon as possible.

was introduced at a regular meeting of the City Council
held on the 6th day of November , 1989 , and
was adopted thereafter by the following vote:
