HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso - CC - 029-1987RESOLUTION NO. 29-87 RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF PENINSULA LEGISLATORS TO PRESERVE COMMUTER RAIL SERVICE IN THE BAYSHORE CORRIDOR AND SUPPORT OF SB666 RESOLVED, by the CITY COUNCIL of the City of Burlingame, California, and this Council does hereby FIND, ORDER and DETERMINE as follows: WHEREAS, Legislators representing San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties have joined together to urge the State of California to preserve Commuter Rail Service in the Bayshore Corridor between San Francisco and San Jose by, among other actions, providing funding to: (1) purchase the Southern Pacific right-of-way between San Francisco and San Jose; (2) con- struct a maintenance facility; (3) extend service to downtown San Francisco; and (4) complete the present capital improvements program; and WHEREAS, SB 666 would require the state to become a sig- natory to the Joint Powers Agreement to provide for joint ownership and operation of the peninsula commute service; and WHEREAS, continued State operating participation into the next decade and State -assisted capital improvements are essential if Commuter Rail Service is to be preserved; and WHEREAS, elimination of the rail service would divert some 17,000 daily commute trips to Bayshore Corridor freeways; and WHEREAS, the State Department of Transportation has forecast that said freeways will reach peak hour gridlock by the mid 1990's without substantial mitigation; and WHEREAS, the San Mateo County Transit District has in- vested substantial local funding in the rail service since 1978 and has pledged major additional resources for future operating and capital support; and WHEREAS, the City of Burlingame recognizes that the above referenced efforts by Bay Area Legislators represent the best hope to attain continued State participation in the Commuter Rail Ser- vice and preservation and enhancement of the system. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Burlingame pledges its support and commitment to the Legislators fighting for preservation of the Caltrain rail service and support of SB666, and urges all residents of San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties to join in this vital campaign by directing messages of support to said legislators and submitting their wishes in writing to the State Administration in Sacramento.
