RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE EXTENSION OF THE CALTRAIN RAIL
FURTHER TOWARD THE SAN FRANCISCO DOWNTOWN CORE
NEAR THE TRANSBAY TERMINAL
RESOLVED by the CITY COUNCIL of the CITY OF BURLINGAME
as follows:
WHEREAS, legislators representing San Francisco, San
Mateo, and Santa Clara Counties have previously joined together
to urge the State of California to preserve commuter rail ser-
vice in the Bayshore Corridor by, among other things, providing
funding to purchase the Southern Pacific right-of-way between
San Francisco and San Jose and by completing the present capital
improvements program; and
WHEREAS, elimination of the rail service would add some
17,000 daily commute trips to Bayshore Corridor freeways; and
WHEREAS, the State Department of Transportation has
forecast that said freeways will reach peak -hour gridlock by the
mid 1990s without substantial mitigation; and
WHEREAS, the San Mateo County Transit District has in-
vested substantial local funding in the rail service since 1978
and has pledged major additional resources for future operating
and capital support; and
WHEREAS, the Hills International Study recommends exten-
sion of the CalTrain system further toward the San Francisco
Downtown core near the Transbay Terminal and further concludes
that moving the CalTrain station away from the Downtown and to
Seventh and Channel will significantly erode ridership.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Burlingame requests that the Metropolitan Transpor-
tation Commission add the extension of the CalTrain system to
the San Francisco Downtown core near the Transbay Terminal to
its funding priorities and asks that any funding received for
San mateo County be used first to protect and enhance CalTrain
as a usable, convenient link in our transportation system.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City
of Burlingame pledges its unqualified support and total commit -
1
ment to the preservation of the CalTrain rail service and urges
all residents of San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara
Counties to join in this vital campaign to provide better needed
service by extending CalTrain to the Transbay Terminal as a high
priority in transportation funding.
