CITY ATTORNEY
CITY OF BURLINGAME
501 PRIMROSE ROAO
BURLINGAME. CALIF. 94010
RESOLUTION NO. 24 -95
IN SUPPORT OF UPGRADING CALTRAIN AND
TERMINATING BART AT COLMA
RESOLVED by the CITY COUNCIL of the City of Burlingame, California, and this
Council does hereby find, order and determine as follows:
WHEREAS, a meaningful alternative to the automobile would be an upgraded
CalTrain system along with better feeder -bus service; and
WHEREAS, the bayside communities of San Mateo County would not be served by
BART -SFO but are served by CalTrain; and
WHEREAS, BART will be connected to the airport via CalTrain at Embarcadero
station when CalTrain is extended into downtown San Francisco; and
WHEREAS, BART -SFO would not relieve traffic congestion on Highway 101, but an
upgraded CalTrain would; and
WHEREAS, the financial drain of operating a BART extension past Colma would
compromise SamTrans funding of CalTrain as well as buses; and
WHEREAS, BART will probably never "ring the Bay" because of the billions of
dollars it would cost and since CalTrain can be connected with BART in downtown San
Francisco as well as connected to BART in Fremont for a fraction of the cost and time to
build BART; and
WHEREAS, extending BART down the peninsula would eliminate CalTrain as well
as require many years of construction during which thousands of current CalTrain commuters
would be added to the traffic on Highway 101; and
WHEREAS, the BART -SFO DEIR/SDEIS is biased in favor of BART and does not
seriously consider other public transit options.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Burlingame finds and determines that,
