RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BURLINGAME
EXPRESSING CONCERN ABOUT CONSTRUCTING A COUNTY BIKE TRAIL
ALONG THE CALTRAIN TRACKS
RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Burlingame:
WHEREAS, the City of Burlingame has promoted bike trails along Sawyer Camp and the
Bayfront, and seeks to encourage use of other means of transportation besides the car; and
WHEREAS, the City of Burlingame has gone on record supporting the upgrading of
CalTrain, with increased service to San Francisco International Airport and Downtown San
Francisco, while striving to protect our citizens from unsafe crossings and trespassing; and
WHEREAS, the need for commuter bike paths appears to be in an east -west direction,
toward our rail stations and from our residential neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, construction of a multi-purpose bike trail next to the CalTrain tracks has been
rejected for many valid safety and economic reasons by the City of San Mateo, the Bikeways and
Pedestrian Advisory Committee of the City/County Association of Governments (COAG), the
Intercity High Speed Rail Commission, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (Division 65),
and others; and
WHEREAS, agencies of the County of San Mateo, including County Commissions, San
Mateo County Transportation Authority, and CCAG have had insufficient input in the decision-
making process relative to this multi-purpose bike trail to date,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council ofthe City of Burlingame
is emphatically opposed to any pilot program or bike trail construction next to the CalTrain corridor
in the City of Burlingame, and has serious concerns about the building of a bike trail next to the
CalTrain tracks anywhere in San Mateo County.
