RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BURLINGAME URGING
SUPPORT OF MEASURE A AUTHORIZING
THE SAN MATEO COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT
TO ISSUE $148 MILLION IN BONDS FOR CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS TO THE
DISTRICT'S FACILITIES
WHEREAS, the San Mateo County Community College District first opened its doors to
35 students of the first class of 1922 at the Downtown San Mateo Baldwin Campus; then to San
Mateo Central Park; then to North Delaware and Peninsula Avenue, San Mateo; and after World
War II, to Coyote Point where it conducted a Merchant Marine Cadet School; and
WHEREAS, post -World War H growth hastened the development of the current three -
campus system with the opening of the College Heights campus of the College of San Mateo in
1963, Canada College in Redwood City in 1968, and Skyline College in San Bruno in 1969; and
WHEREAS, seventy-seven years after the founding of the District, these three campuses
serve approximately 26,000 students; and
WHEREAS, Burlingame citizens have been well -served by the District, with
approximately 1,084 Burlingame residents currently attending District campuses, with 124 at
Canada College, 808 at College of San Mateo, and 152 at Skyline College; and
WHEREAS, restoration and repair of the well-worn facilities is the District's critical need
to ensure student safety and the quality of the learning environment; and
WHEREAS, the District has submitted a bond measure to the voters at the November
1999 election to approve funding for capital improvements from seismic safety to roof, plumbing,
electrical, heating, cooling, and lighting improvements; and
WHEREAS, this bond measure will restore these valuable assets and strengthen the
participation and education of students facing an increasingly competitive working world,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:
1. The City Council urges citizens to vote in favor of Measure A, the Bond Measure for
the San Mateo County Community College District, and support the renovations and repairs that
will be funded by that measure.

foregoing Resolution was introduced at a regular meeting of the City Council held on the 18th
day of October , 1999, and was adopted thereafter by the following vote:
