City of Burlingame Page 2 Printed on 10/1112019 Burlingame Library Board of Trustees Minutes August 20, 2019 Roll Call Trustees Present: Kerbey Altmann, Danielle Garcia, Mike Nagler, Elizabeth Ostrow Trustee Absent: Randi Murray Staff Present: Brad McCulley, City Librarian Sidney Poland, Recorder Manuel Caneri II. Library Board of Trustees Minutes The Trustees unanimously approved the minutes of the July 19, 2019 Trustee Meeting. M/S/C (Altmann/Nagler) III. Correspondence and Information July 2019 Statistics - The Trustees noted that e-media continues to show an increase in usage. IV. From the Floor (Public Comments) There were not any representatives from the public who attended the Trustee meeting. V. Reports A. City Librarian's Report - Highlights The City Librarian's "Show and Tell" power point presentation was tabled due to technical difficulties. It will be an agenda item for the September Trustee meeting. B. Speaker's Series Dates of the 3 remaining Speaker Series events for 2019 - 2020 are as follows: • Lucy Kalanithi - Author Talk - September 15tn • Susan Orlean - Author Talk - November 3rd • Kim Sajet - National Portrait Gallery Director January 26tn C. Monthly Topic - Adult Services - Postponed VI. Closed Session A. Michael Patrick Casey - Suspension from the Burlingame Public Library The Trustees unanimously moved that Brad will send a letter to Michael Patrick Casey advising him of his suspension from the Burlingame Public Libraries, both the Main and Easton, for a period of one year with the stipulation that upon his return, he sign a pledge to cease his harassing behavior including phone calls and further to provide evidence from a social worker or health professional stating he has been counseled. M/S/C (Altmann / Ostrow) B. William Bola - Suspension from the Burlingame Public Library Trustee Altmann moved that Brad would write a letter to William Bolsa advising him of his suspension from the Burlingame Public Library, both main and Easton, for a period of one year with the stipulation that in order for his library privileges to be reinstated he must sign a letter that he will follow the Library's Behavior Policy or face suspension again. The motion carried with the majority of the Trustees voting in favor of the motion and one of the Trustees opposing the motion. M/S/C Altmann/Ostrow VII. New Business Staff Development Day The Trustees unanimously approved the request of the City Librarian to provide financial support for Staff Development Day in the amount of $500.00 to be funded from one of the Trustee accounts at the discretion of Jeannine Culligan who oversees the Trustees' financials. M/S/C (Altmann/Garcia) VIII. Adjournment The Meeting was adjourned at 7:OOpm. M/S/C (Kerbey/Nagler). The next meeting of the Library Board of Trustees will be held on September 17, 2019 in the Upper Level Meeting Room at 5:30pm. Previously of American Consulate, South Korea. Recruitments o The Library will be interviewing for a New Teen/Children Librarian. We have extended the recruitment due to low number of applications. General Updates: o Monthly Topic — Adult Svcs o Strategic Plan 2019/2020 — N/A o Passport Intake update — o Policy — • Library Security Camera policy -- pending • Community Board Posting policy — pending • Law Enforcement/ICE Records Requests policy — pending o Tech Lab update: "The Lab" Create, tinker, and play at the Lab! — N/A o Training — • Staff have met with members from Life Moves and Burlingame Police Critical Response Team to work on training for staff using Critical Intervention techniques. San Mateo County's Behavioral Health team will assist with the training. Date tbd for November. o Significant Upcoming Events — (adult learning classes overview) • "English Learners Conversation Group" every Wed and Thurs • "Computer Drop In" every Saturday • "Beginner Google Does for Adults and Seniors" various dates/times o Facilities update — • New shades have been installed in Library and are very handsome, thanks to Trustee Board's keen foresight in funding them. 1 o Foundation report — • When Breath Becomes Air: A Conversation with Dr. Lucy Kalanithi — Sunday Sept 15t' was very well received thanks to the hard work of Trustee Murray, Foundation President Christina Funk, and many others. • Susan Orleans in Conversation with Greg Lucus, CA State Librarian November 3'. o PLS/PLP — • MacMillan eBook boycott was not approved by PLS Admin. Council. • Colleges still moving to Statewide ILS not within PLS. Staff are working to find a solution that will not require much effort on patrons' part but unsure how this will work out.
