Board of Trustees Minutes May 21, 2019
Roll Call
Trustees Present: Kerbey Altmann, Mike Nagler, Randi Murray
Trustees Absent: Andy Blanco, Lisa Rosenthal
Staff Present: Sidney Poland, Recorder
Brad McCulley, City Librarian
II. Introduction of Guests
Mike McFadden and Iry Agard introduced themselves to the Trustees as
prospective board members.
III. Library Board of Trustees Minutes
The Trustees unanimously approved the minutes of the April 16, 2019
Trustee Board meeting with the correction that for the June 7th
Foundation fundraiser the reception with the artists is at 6:00 and the
program begins at 7:00. M/S/C (Altmann/Nagler)
IV. Statistics
The Trustees reviewed the April statistics noting that e-media is
increasing and Tech Lab attendance is showing a slight decrease.
V. Reports
A. City Librarian's Report - Highlights
• First round of interviews for Volunteer Coordinator position was
held on May 20th. Five candidates interviewed for the position. A
second round of interviews will be held May 28th and May 29th.
• Summer Reading Kick-off will be held Saturday June 8th 1-3 at the
main library and June loth 6-7 at Easton.
• Installation of the new LED lights bulbs began on May 17th.
B. Foundation Report
John Ward has selected the Library Foundation and Call Primrose to
be the beneficiaries of his yearly garden tour. The tour is scheduled
1-5 on June 30th.
C. Speaker's Series
• Tickets for Jazz in the Ballroom were sold out in two weeks.
• Making individual sponsorships available for purchase proved to
be very successful.
• Tickets purchased for Call Primrose as a gift from the Trustees will
be raffled off to Burlingame residents at Call Primrose's weekly
raffle.
D. Trustee Account - The Trustees reviewed the expenditures for the
month of March 2019.
VI. Unfinished Business
A. Lane Room Upgrade
• Brad distributed the report on the redesign of the Lane Room
prepared by the inters from the D-Tech high school in Redwood
City.
• Brad is writing a grant with Patty Anixter to present to the Smart
Family requesting funds for the Lane Room re -model.
B. Window Shade Quote Revised
The Trustees unanimously passed a motion to approve the revised
quote for the purchase of new window shades throughout the library
in the amount of $37,463.31. M/S/C (Murray/Altmann)
C. VKK Signmakers Inc. Quote Revised
The Trustee unanimously passed a motion to approve the revised
quote from VKK Signmakers Inc. in the amount of $3,232 which
includes the addition of new letters to identify the rest rooms on the
main floor. M/S/C (Altmann/Randi).
VII. New Business
Review of Quote for Stage Addition
The Trustees unanimously passed a motion approving the expenditures
for a new stage section in the amount of $1,072.88.

VIII. Adjournment
The Meeting was adjourned at 7:00pm. M/S/C (Altmann/Murray). The
next meeting of the Library Board of Trustees will be held on June 18,
2019 in the Upper Level Meeting Room at 5:30pm.

This month's First Friday Art Series was a Zine Fest based on Community and
Civic Action. 100 people attended, and established artists and members of

the community collaborated on a community zine (mini -magazine), which

Personnel Updates:
Comings and Goings
o We have hired a Volunteer Coordinator to be officially announced once paperwork and background check are
complete.
Recruitments
o The Library will be recruiting an hourly custodian working one day a week as an alternate for our current
custodial staff
General Updates:
o Monthly Topic — Strategic Plan
o Strategic Plan 2019/2020 —Managers met 6/11 to discuss Strat Plan (see attached updated plan)
o Passport Intake update — N/A
o Policy —
• Library Security Camera policy -- pending
• Community Board Posting policy -- pending
o Training —
• All -Staff (full-time only) meeting June 20' as quarterly informational session and as a communication
discussion
o Significant Upcoming Events —
• Summer Reading Kick-off at Main and Easton— was great event with 300 people attending, Easton event
was very hot but went off without any mishaps
• Elaine Tai and the City Librarian represented Burlingame at the San Mateo County Gay Pride festival in
San Mateo Central Park
• Head Over High Heels 2 — June is Gay Pride Month so bringing back second annual Drag Queen Night @
the Library Wednesday, June 19th at 7pm in the Lane Room
• Pride Month Drag Queen Storytime starring Vanilla Meringue! -- books, music, and dancing — June 29'
11 am in Children's Room
o Facilities update —
• New LED light bulbs have been installed. It will be a work in progress as some areas are not as bright as
we had hoped and other areas are too bright.
• Easton Branch had its first closure of the year on 6/11/19 due to heat. The internal temp reached 86 and
we close at 83 degrees.
o Foundation report —
0 Speaker Series event June 7t' in with "Jazz in the Ballroom" was complete success.
• Staff feel they have an idea that will save time and money moving/setting up Reading Room for events
• John Ward Garden Tour fundraiser June 30' 1-5pm in Burlingame
o PLS/PLP — PLS budget recently passed and directors voted to replace Gale suite of online educational resources
with Ebsco, as well as, all libraries moving to Zinio eMagazines. Burlingame will be giving up Flipster in lieu of.
