Approved Board of Trustee Minutes
June 20, 2017
I. Call to Order
President Altmann called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
II. Roll Call
Trustees Present: Kerbey Altmann, Andy Blanco, Randi Murray,
Lisa Rosenthal (by phone)
Trustee Absent Mike Nagler
Staff Present: Brad McCulley, City Librarian
Sidney Poland, Recorder
III. Library Board of Trustees minutes
The Trustees approved the Library Board Minutes for May 31,
2017. M/S/C (Murray/Rosenthal)
IV. From the Floor (public comments)
No one from the public attended the Trustee meeting.
V. Statistics
Brad will meet with Trustee Murray to discuss the new format for
the statistic reporting.
VI. Reports
A. City Librarian's Report - no update since May report.
B. Foundation Report
The total proceeds for the Book and Author Luncheon are
$74,200. $4,200 are the proceeds from Fund A Need.
VII. Unfinished Business
A. Program Strategy for Adult Services
Randi, Mike, (Trustees), Brad, Tommy (Library Staff) met with
Foundation members Patty Anixter, Terry Nagel, Noreen West,
and Christina Funk to present them with some of the ideas
they are discussing about how to develop and plan for an adult
speakers series. Highlights of the meeting follow.
• Adult Reference staff, under Tommy's direction, would
research well known speakers and authors.
Trustees and Foundation member would also be asked
to assist in this effort.
• Library staff would assist with marketing, posters etc.
• Prepare budget after Brad is able to ascertain the cost of
upgrading the Reading Room to accommodate an
audience of 80-300 attendees, as well as proper lighting,
sound and seating.
• Create ways to engage new volunteers from Burlingame
and Hillsborough in assisting with this project.
B. Paoletti Consulting - Acoustical Consulting Program
The Trustees unanimously approved funding for Paoletti
Consulting to prepare a report recommending upgrades for the
sound system, improved lighting and additional seating in the
reading and the teen rooms in the amount of $2,500.

C. Ross McDonald Co., Inc. Quote - Wooden Furniture
The Trustees agreed to Brad's request to put the quote for
wooden furniture on hold.
D. Library T Shirts with Mission Statement
The Trustees unanimously approved a budget of $1,000 to
purchase library t shirts, subject to adding the word
"Burlingame" to the design on the front side so it reads
"Burlingame Library".
E. Public Terrace Policy
The Trustees unanimously passed the motion to approve the
Public Terrace Policy which clearly states in the posted signage
that "No Minor Under the Age of 18 Allowed on This
Terrace Without a Parent." City of Burlingame

VIII. New Business
A. San Mateo Public Library's Programming for Young Adults
The Trustees agreed to table this item until the July meeting as
Trustee Nagler wants to be present for the discussion.
B. Burlingame Public Library - Bike Lock Policy
1. Terms of Proposed Bike Lock Policy
• Library will loan out bike locks to patrons who wish
to use the bike racks while using library services.
User must have valid PLS library card or leave a valid
ID.
• Locks must be returned by the end of the day to the
Information Desk. Late fee is $ 1.00. Patron will be
charged full replacement cost if lock is not returned.
• Burlingame Library is not responsible for patron's
bike if it is lost, stolen or damaged with or without
the bike lock.
• Patron must sign Bike Lock Agreement before
checking out the bike lock.
2. Trustee Action
The Trustees unanimously approved the Bike Lock Policy

C. Funding for Digitizing the Advance Star
The Advance Star is the old Burlingame Newspaper which now
resides in bound volumes in the Library storage room. The paper
began publication in 1914 and ended in 1970. The volumes are
falling apart and the contents are very fragile.
• Digitizing these volumes is part of the Request for Proposal
that the City is putting together to digitize years of
important documents such as Library Board Minutes, City
Council Minutes, maps, City Ordinances etc.
• Brad is researching avenues of supplemental funding for
the Advance Star project.
IX. Announcements
A. Trustee Summer Meetings
The Trustees will hold their regular scheduled meeting on July
18, 2017. The August Trustee meeting scheduled for August
15, 2017 will be cancelled due to vacation schedules.
B. July Agenda Item
Nominations and election for President and Secretary of the
Board of Trustees will be place on the July agenda.
X. Adjournments
The meeting was adjourned at 7:00 p.m. M/S/C (Murray/Blanco).
The next meeting of the Library Board of Trustees will be held July
18, 2017 in the Library Conference Room at 5:30 p.m.
