Board of Trustee Minutes

March 21, 2023
I. Roll Call: Trustees Present: Kris Cannon, Mark Lucchesi, Mike Nagler,
Trustees Absent: Danielle Garcia, Elisabeth Ostrow
Staff Present Brad McCulley, City Librarian
Sidney Poland, Recorder
II. Approvals:
A. The City Council approved the City Librarian's Staff Report which
requested that the Trustees be granted permission to use funds from
the Duncan Trust in the amount of $5,000 to donate to future library
projects.
B. Trustees approved the amount of $1,500 as a yearly budget
to cover costs of Meet and Greet events.
C. The Trustees approved payment to McDonough Fine Arts
Appraisals, LLC in the amount of $1,012.50 for appraisal of the
sculpture by Ray Lorenzato that is being gifted to the Library.
III. Library Board of Trustee Minutes
The Trustees unanimously approved the February 21, 2023 Board of
Trustee Minutes. M/S/C (Nagler/Lucchesi).
IV. Correspondence and Information
The Trustees reviewed the February statistics for Adult, Children's and
Teen Programs and noted that the running total for attendance at
Children's and Teens programs increased by 1,849.
V. Public Comments — There were not any members of the public who
attended the meeting.
VI. Reports
A. City Librarian's Report — Elevators
The City Librarian, Brad, noted that both the public and staff
elevators have been out of order for a number of days for the last two
months. The elevators are obsolete. Therefore, parts are difficult to
locate and in a few instances had to be made. Unfortunately, due to
budget restraints, there is not an immediate permanent solution.
B. Foundation Report
• The Foundation's April Book Sale will be held April 20th - April
23=d.
• On May 7, 2023, the foundation Speaker's Series will host
Michael McFaul who was the Russian Ambassador in President
Obama's Administration.
C. Equity Report
The Trustees reviewed the Equity Report. Highlights of the
Report follow.
• The Library Equity Team and the City's Human Resource Director
attended the County's first City/Jurisdiction Equity convening on
January 26, 2023. The group will meet quarterly,
• During United Against Hate Week residents were encouraged to write
their goals or wishes for the community and attach them to specific
trees located at the Main Library, City Hall and the Community Center.
• The Reading Room Mural has a new banner that covers the old
statement. It now reads "Living in Burlingame is for Everyone"
Tommy McMahon, Geralyn O'Brien, Olma O'Neill, Ray De Lara and Sarah
Tinkham are the current members of the Equity Team.
VII. Old Business
A. Duncan Trust
The Staff Report, written by the City Librarian, requesting that the
Trustees be given permission to allocate $5,000 from the Duncan Trust
to future library projects that will benefit the staff and the community
was passed by the City Council.
B. Meet and Greet — Action Item
The Trustee unanimously passed a motion to set up a yearly budget of
$1,500 to finance Meet and Greet events. M/S/C Lucchesi/Nagler
C. Art Donation Update — Action Item
1. Art sculpture by Ray Lorenzato
• Johnson Woo, Fleet and Facilities Manager, has advised that
the sculpture has to be attached to a solid stand.
• The Lorenzato family has requested that the library contact an
Art Conservator to apply an epoxy gel that will prevent the
the marble from staining. Brad has contacted a Conservationist
to obtain information on this issue.
• The Trustees unanimously passed a motion to pay for the
appraisal of the sculpture in the amount of $1,012.50.

2. Barbara Berke
Artist Barbara Berke will give a presentation of her art project
that she has created to hang from a mobile in the stairwell at the
April Trustee meeting.
VIII. New Business
A. Strategic Plan
• Tommy McMahon, Kathy von Mayrhauser, Ray De Lara,
Olma O'Neill, Geralyn O'Brien and Jodi Jirsa are the
committee members.
• The Trustees reviewed the draft plan. Brad, the City
Librarian, noted that changes can be made and encouraged
the Trustees to share their ideas.
• The plan will eventually be opened to all staff.
• The Strategic Plan will be on the April agenda.
