III. Mav Statistics
• The Children's Librarians spent most of the month visiting
Burlingame and Hillsborough schools to promote their Summer
Learning Program. They visited 48 classrooms and presented the
program to 1,145 students ranging from Kindergarten to 8tn
grade. The Summer Learning program is open to all ages.
• Adult Services held 5 programs with an attendance of 134.
IV. Reports
A. City Librarian's Report — Highlights
• Personnel Update — The Tech. Services Manager position has not
had many applicants. The City Librarian and the Human
Resources Director are making the position a dual classification.
The dual classification makes it possible for the candidate to have
either a MLIS degree or have IT and/or management skills without
possessing a MLIS degree.
• Benny Bufano Owl — The Trustees paid for the appraisal of the
Benny Bufano Owl. The Foundations requested to oversee the
project of the owl as they would like to use it to help promote their
fund raising goals. Changing their logo to an owl is being
considered. The Foundation will fund the owl's base and Sara
Simpson has found a qualified person to perform remediation.
• Cooling Center — The Trustees reviewed the Cooling Center Plan
that was approved by the City Council last year.
• Lane Room Upgrade — The Lane Room AV Upgrade has been
postponed due to supply issues that are preventing the original
contractor from providing an estimate on installing a new system.
• HVAC — The HAVC upgrade started today, June 215t and will be a
work in progress until possibly September. The work begins at
6:OOam and ends for the day around 3:OOpm. Tech. Lab is being
used to store equipment for the project and will not be open to the
public.
• Chandeliers — Brad, the City Librarian, has met with a lighting
designer who recommended installing LED recessed lights around
the perimeter of the stairwell rather than replacing the
chandeliers.
Artist, Barbara Burke, has created an art piece that would hang
down the stairwell. How to install the art piece has not been
determined at this time.
B. Foundation Report
Terri Neill is the new Foundation President. Cindy Montgomery will
chair the October book sale.
V. Old Business
A. AMH
Under normal circumstances The Technical Services Manager would
oversee this project. Jason Yap will be the new acting Technical
Services Manger replacing Andrea Shaw who took over the position on
a temporary basis when Megan Wong left.
B. Date for Next Meet and Greet with BPL staff
Trustees Cannon and Ostrow have offered to work on the type of
event and possible dates for the next staff and Trustee get together
and will bring their ideas to the July Trustee meeting.
C. Recognition for National Charity League Mural Painters
The Trustees would like to acknowledge the artist and the girls who
helped to paint the mural. It was suggested that Brad, the City
Librarian, could send an e-mail to one of the mothers of the group
who could possibly help with the names of the girls who participated
in the mural painting.
D. Poet Laureate
The Trustees discussed the Poet Laureate program and affirmed their
commitment to support it.
• The Trustees committed to fund the initial fee of $2,500 and
requested that this item be brough to a vote in the July
meeting.
• There is a yearly fee which is based on the partner's operating
budget.
• The Trustees expressed concern over the possibility that the
Poet Laureate could be appointed. They want the selection to
be made from a competition of all the applicants.
• The City Librarian will inquire about the process that is used
to select the Poet Laureate.
• The suggestion was made that the Poet Laureate program
could become a goal for the Foundation and Trustees to
work on together.

VI. New Business
A. Banned Books Discussion
The Trustees discussed the subject of banned books and made the
following suggestions that could be implemented by the Library and
Foundation.
• Foundation and Library should make a statement on their
website against banning books.
• Library should get on the band wagon by promoting awareness
of what book banning actually means. One idea was to have a
banner on one side of the front door or archway inside with a
book banning quote.
• Joint statement from Trustees and Foundation placed on round
table so public can clearly see what both entities stand for.
• Trustee Cannon noted that banning of books in this area is not
such an issue. We need to look outward to other states and
cities and help them become aware of book banning in their
libraries and schools. This includes older school children as
well.
• The City Librarian noted that the Burlingame Public Library has
never banned a book.
• Banned Books will be on the July agenda.
B. Rotation and Term Expiration
The Trustees unanimously passed a motion that Kristine Cannon
would become President of the Board of Trustees on July 19, 2022 and
Mark Lucchesi would become Vice Chair of the Library Board of
Trustees on July 19, 2022. Trustees Cannon and Lucchesi will serve
until July of 2023. M/S/C/ Nagler/Ostrow.
Trustees Garcia and Ostrow were reappointed by the City Council on
to serve as members of the Library Board of Trustees for a term
of 3 years beginning on July 19, 2022 and expiring in July of 2025.
VII. Action Items
• The City Librarian will reach out to his contact at the National Charity
League Skyline Chapter regarding possible recognition for the girls
who assisted the artist in painting the mural.
• The City Librarian will meet with Jenny Miner to discuss how the Poet
Laureate is selected.
• The City Librarian will meet with Johnson Woo to discuss the ideas of
the lighting designer with regard to not replacing the chandelier.
