Approved Board of Trustees Minutes
January 21, 2020
I. Roll Call
Trustees Present: Kerbey Altmann, Danielle Garcia, Randi
Murray, Mike Nagler, Elisabeth Ostrow,
Staff Present: Brad McCulley, City Librarian

Jenny Miner, Teen Librarian
II. Library Board of Trustees Minutes
The Trustees unanimously approved the minutes of the December 17,
2019 Trustee Meeting noting the spelling correction of the Laks family.

III. December Statistics Highlights
• It was noted that the Trailing 12-month Circulation and Study
Room Usage Graph is an effective indicator of where the library
stands statistically in these areas.
• Children’s Department held 31 holiday programs which were
attended by 2,327 library patrons.
• Adult Services held 42 programs and had an attendance of 178
patrons.
IV. From the Floor (Public Comments)
There were not any representatives from the public who attended the
Trustee meeting.
V. Reports
A. City Librarian’s Report – Highlights
• The Burlingame Public Library has received a check from
Boston Private Bank in the amount of $5,661.84 which
represents the final distribution of unclaimed funds from
the Wayne A. Willert Trust. These funds will be allocated
to the Trustees’ General Fund.
• Public Works has hired a part time painter to work in the
City buildings for 6 months. The main focus of the
painting project for the library will be the public areas.
• Community Colleges have disassociated themselves from
the PLS catalog and will now work within the Statewide
catalog system. PLS patrons will be able to borrow books
from this catalog but it will have to be done through our
local libraries and will be similar to requesting an Inter
Library Loan.

B. Speaker’s Series
• On January 26th, Kim Saget, Director of the Smithsonian’s
National Portrait Gallery will be the final guest for the first
year of the Speaker’s Series. Ms. Saget will be accompanied
by Hugo Crosthwaite. Tickets are still available for this
event.
• The committee for the Speaker’s Series is looking into other
areas that might be of public interest.
C. Foundation Report
For the year ending 2019, the Foundation has received funds in
the amount of $137,000 from the Speakers’ Series and ended the
year with $100,000 in the legacy fund. Brad has requested
$170,00 from the Foundation to upgrade the Tech. Lab.
Foundation members noted that in 2019 consistent donors
increased their contributions.
E. Special Topic – Jenny Miner Teen Librarian
Jenny presented the Trustees with an overview of teen activities
and events for the coming year. Highlights follow.
1. Homework Center - The Homework Center opened today with
six to eight trained high school mentors from Burlingame
High, St. Catherine’s, St. Ignatius and Mercy Monday through
Wednesday for two hours. Each mentor comes one day a week
• Mentors providing assistance in foreign languages
will be available as follows: Spanish Mon.- Wed.,
Cantonese and Mandarin on Mondays and Japanese
on Tuesday.
• Age range is first grade through sixth grade.
2. Student Success Initiative - Jenny is working with the
Burlingame High School Library Tech., Brittney, on special
projects.
• Working with Circulation staff to create library cards
for 9th graders who do not have cards.
• Ordering textbooks that students are currently using
in class and having them available in the library
• Provide consumable math books to be used in the
Library.
• Jenny will be changing the “Summer Reading”
shelves to “BHS Reads” based on recommended
books by Burlingame High School English teachers.
VI. Old Business
Staff Appreciation Event
A. The Staff Appreciation event will be held on Sunday February 9th
at Sixto’s Cantina at 10:00. Invitation have been sent to staff,
Trustees and Foundation members.

B. Welcome Plaque
Brad has contacted Alpine Plaques regarding the size and
cost of the plaque. The estimated cost for a bronze plaque the size
of the original poster is $1,200. A mock-up will be furnished to the
Trustees for final approval.
C. Procedure for Hourly Development Reimbursement
• The Trustees further discussed the possibility of providing
reimbursement to hourly staff who want to attend
conferences.
Trustee Garcia suggested conducting a survey to determine
an approximate number of hourly staff who would be
interested in this program.
• Brad will set up the survey.
VII. New Business
A. City Tuition Reimbursement Program
Information on this program was provided to the Trustees to
review.
B. Library Director Priorities for 2020
This item was tabled due to time constraints and will be moved
to the February agenda.
VIII. Action Item – Possible Banning of Patron from the Library
The Trustees passed a motion requesting that the City Librarian prepare
the necessary documentation needed to begin the process of banning
Shirley Eitan from the Burlingame Public Library for up to one year.

IX. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 7:00pm. M/S/C (Altmann/Murray) The
next meeting of the Library Board of Trustees will be held on February
18, 2020 in the Upper Level Meeting Room at 5:30pm.
