RESOLUTION NO. 072-2021
RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BURLINGAME DIRECTING STAFF
TO FLY THE PRIDE FLAG AT CITY HALL THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF JUNE 2021
WHEREAS, the City of Burlingame is proud to have a diverse LGBTQ+ community, and
is committed to standing in solidarity with that community in their quest to enhance visibility and
end discrimination and injustice; and
WHEREAS, members of the Burlingame LGBTQ+ community provide endless value to
the City and its residents through their individuality, strength of character, and incredible
achievements; and
WHEREAS, cities across the state and country recognize and celebrate the LGBTQ+
community during the month of June, in what is now recognized federally as "Pride Month;" and
WHEREAS, the City of Burlingame has historically recognized and celebrated Pride
Month through presentations and proclamations celebrating the community; and
WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to more widely communicate its support of the
LGBTQ+ community by flying the Pride Flag at City Hall during Pride Month; and
WHEREAS, flying the City's Pride Flag at City Hall throughout the month of June further
symbolizes the City of Burlingame's official recognition of June as LGBTQ+ Pride month,
reflects the City of Burlingame's viewpoint, and symbolizes the City's celebration of diversity and
support for the LGBTQ+ community; and
WHEREAS, under the Government Speech doctrine, a City may advance its own
speech without requiring viewpoint neutrality when the City itself is the speaker, so long as the
speech does not communicate a religious preference or violate a separate constitutional
provision.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BURLINGAME
RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:
The City Council hereby declares the month of June 2021 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in
the City of Burlingame, and directs staff to fly the Pride Pride Flag on a flagpole at City Hall
throughout the remainder of the month of June, 2021.

the foregoing resolution was adopted at a special meeting of the City Council held on the 91h day
of June, 2021 by the following vote:
