At its meeting of July 23 the Planning Commission made a motion finding special circumstances to grant the request, but the motion failed on a 3-4 vote, which is a denial. Mayor Amstrup opened the public hearing. David Niklaus, GTE Sprint, addressed council. He reviewed his company is a growing company, has a great number of employees and a large payro11, many employees are residents of Burlingame. Councilman Martin suggested an alternative, to only a11ow one of the two signs requested, the one on Airport Boulevard. He reviewed that the L979 decision denying signage for an office building was for an empty office building, not for a particular business in that building. If the sign were not lighted and was only on the Airport Boulevard side he would favor it. Mayor Amstrup stated a denial would not prejudice GTE from coming back with a different plan for signage.
