HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso - CC - 158-2020DocuSign Envelope ID: 4B3791A9-C61C-45A3-9330-7D97D08D6B4B RESOLUTION NO. 158-2020 A RESOLUTION REDUCTING THE DISTANCE A PERSON MAY STOP, PARK, OR LEAVE STANDING A VEHICLE IN RELATION TO A FIRE HYDRANT PURSUANT TO CALIFORNIA VEHICLE CODE SECTION 22514(b) The City Council of the City of Burlingame, California does resolve as follows: WHEREAS, California Vehicle Code Section 22514 states that no person shall stop, park, or leave standing any vehicle within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, with limited exceptions; and WHEREAS, California Vehicle Code Section 22514(b) authorizes the local authority to reduce that distance through the adoption of an ordinance or resolution; and WHEREAS, the above said 15 feet clearance on either side of a fire hydrant results in a total of 30 feet of clearance and significantly impacts curbside on -street parking; and WHEREAS, the City must balance the need for emergency access to a fire hydrant with curbside on -street parking demand; and WHEREAS, the Burlingame Municipal Code authorizes the City Engineer to maintain all no stopping zones, no parking areas, and restricted parking areas; and WHEREAS, the City Council appointed the Traffic, Safety and Parking Commission to review traffic requests, including parking related matters; and WHEREAS, at their regularly scheduled meeting on December 10, 2020, the Traffic, Safety and Parking Commission considered whether the City should reduce the distance a car may stop, park, or leave standing a vehicle in relation to a fire hydrant pursuant to California Vehicle Code Section 22514(b); and WHEREAS, the Commission made the recommendation that the City should have the option to reduce the distance requirement; and WHEREAS, the Central County Fire Department has reviewed and supports the recommended modification. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, DETERMINED AND ORDERED BY THE COUNCIL, AS FOLLOWS: The City Council authorizes reducing the parking restriction distance at a fire hydrant per California Vehicle Code 22514(b), to be done on a case -by -case basis in consultation and input from the Central County Fire Department.
