BURLINGAME PARK and RECREATION COMMISSION

The regular July meeting of the Burlingame Park and Recreation Commission was
called to order by chairman Don Roberts at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall Conference
Room A.

MINUTES
The minutes of the June 16, 1994 meeting were approved as submitted.
OLD BUSINESS
1. Franklin Field Renovation. Director Quadri reported that the project
pre -construction meeting was held on July 21. Construction will begin on
the project very soon.
2. Village and Ray Park Improvements. Director Quadri reported that
Village Park is ready to go to bid, and design work was started at Ray
Park. The projects will be bid together, with construction planned for the
Fall.
3. Recreation Center Office Remodel. Director Williams reported that
construction on the Recreation Center offices is nearly complete.
Painting should occur within the next week with carpeting to follow. Final
project completion is expected within 3-4 weeks.
NEW BUSINESS
None
REPORTS
1. Heritage Park. Director Quadri reported that the bridge has been
determined to be unsafe due to rotten support timbers. The approximate
cost to replace the bridge has been estimated at $50,000. Staff proposes
that the the bridge not be replaced and that the area be cleaned up and
landscaped. A small out -look sitting area could be constructed at the
ends of the existing bridge.

2. Burlingame High School Tennis Courts. Director Williams
reported that the City will contribute $10,000 to a School District project to
crack -patch and color -coat the BHS tennis courts. The project is
scheduled for late August.
3. Depot Improvements. Director Williams reported that staff was
moving ahead to carpet the Depot floor in order to reduce the noise level
inside the building. The balance of the approximately $11,000 remaining
in the Depot renovation fund can be used for landscaping and other
exterior improvements. Commissioner Henderson asked about improving
the lighting in the area of the Depot.
Chairman Roberts requested that Williams bring Depot master plans
developed at the design charette to the next Commission meeting.
4. Summer Recreation Program. Director Williams reported that
summer activities were in full operation. Many classes and activities
have registered the maximum number of participants this summer.
5. Ray Park Playground. Commissioner Henderson asked if some of
the Eucalyptus trees shading the Ray Park playground could be
removed. Director Quadri responded that the playground renovation
project will relocate equipment into a spot with more sunshine.
6. Village Park Gate. Commissioner Henderson expressed concern that
the new A.D.A. compliant gate at Village park might create a safety
hazard for small children.

improvements
vs safety issues. A report is
requested
in
September.
7. Request that City Council Consider Adeline/El Camino for
Park Site. Commissioner Henderson asked for clarification of recent
reports that citizens had requested that the City Council purchase the
vacant property at Adeline and El Camino for a city park.

8. Washington Park Tennis Court Bumps. Commissioner Yawn
requested an update regarding the status of actions against the
contractor whose work led to the bumps in the Washington Park courts.
Director Williams indicated that he would review the matter with former
Director Wagner.

9. Roller Hockey. Chairman Roberts requested that staff contact Mrs.
Kirchner and ask her to report on the status of her roller hockey activity.
Roberts also asked that Commissioners be alert to areas that might be
used for roller hockey activities in Burlingame.
10. AYSO (Soccer) Registration. Chairman stated that 1,217 young
people recently signed up for the next session of AYSO soccer play. This
number is up from the 700-800 registrants in the program a few years
ago. Clearly, the Commission's ongoing concern for more new and
improved playing fields in the community is warranted.
NEXT MEETING
Chairman Roberts noted that he would be out of town for the
Commission's August meeting. It was agreed that staff will survey the
Commissioners two weeks before the scheduled meeting to determine if
an August meeting should be held.
