HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - PR - 1995.04.20MINUTES Burlingame Park and Recreation Commission Thursday, April 20, 1995 The regular meeting of the Burlingame Park and Recreation Commission was called to order by Chairman Don Roberts at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall Conference Room A. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Henderson, Nilmeyer, Nyhan, Pera, Roberts Commissioners Absent: Kelly Staff Present: Directors Quadri and Williams MINUTES The minutes of the March 16, 1995 meeting of the Commission were approved as submitted. OLD BUSINESS 'I- I . Washington Park Tennis Court 'Bumps" (Informational report) Director Williams reported that he had been advised by City Attorney Coleman that testing of the core samples taken at the Washington Park Tennis Courts is not yet completed. Coleman anticipates that the report and staff recommendations will be available for review at the May meeting of the Commission. 2. Addition of Two Teen Advisory Members to the Commission. Director Williams reported that, to date, no applications have been received for Commission Youth Advisory members. All Commissioners are urged to seek -out 9th and loth grade students who might be good candidates for the positions. Application packets may be obtained at high school offices or the Recreation Center. 3. Teen Programs. a. Williams reported that the after school fitness class for teens has been completed for the spring session. A summary of all programs open to teens now appears in one place in the summer program brochure. The number of activities open to teen participation is extensive. b. Possibilities for roller blading activities were discussed. Commissioners suggested that a roller blade special event be considered at the waterfront, with special efforts being made for teen participation. 4. Report on Together We Can Make a Difference Program. Williams reported that strong community interest has been expressed in the concept of cooperative planning for activities for youth and families. The steering committee believes that participating in the July 23-25 training workshop in Palm Springs this year is the most efficient way to kickoff the program. In future years Burlingame can do its own workshop, perhaps in conjunction with other neighboring communities. It is expected that 15-20 persons will attend the July workshop this year. Several groups and individuals have come forward to offer workshop scholarships for youth and seniors. 5. Girls Softball use of Ray Park. Williams reported that the wet weather in March and April has caused numerous makeup games for the Girls Softball League, greatly inconveniencing the neighbors in the Ray Park area. Williams has been working with neighbors and league officials to reschedule games. Sunday, April 23 should be the last weekend for major makeup scheduling, barring future rainouts or scheduling problems. On Sunday games will be played at the High School, at the league's Millbrae site and three games are planned at Ray Park. Williams has authorized two games at 12:00 noon and one game at 2:00 so that games can be completed and the park cleared by 4:00 p.m. Any future Sunday makeup games at Ray Park will be limited to one at a time, afternoon games and only on the back diamond. The Commission agreed to review field scheduling for 1996 in the Fall after the election of the new softball Board of Directors. Williams and Quadri stated their intention of recommending that no softball games be permitted before the last weekend in March or 1 st weekend in April in the future, just as boys baseball and City adult softball leagues currently arrange their schedules. NEW BUSINESS 1. Revision of Facilities Priorities List, 1996-200. The Commission reviewed its current priority list and the status of various City projects. It was agreed that staff will draft a status list of park and recreation projects for Commission review in May. I]'IK 1. Park Director. Director Quadri reported that: a. The Village and Ray Park playground renovation project RFP's have been put out to several vendors. The project committee will review proposals on May 5. The committee's report and recommendations will be on the Commission's agenda for review at the May Commission meeting. 2 b. Franklin School Field is now in use by both schools, youth soccer, girls softball and boys baseball. 3. Recreation Director. Director Williams reported that: a. The 25th Anniversary edition of Art in the Park is scheduled for June 10 and 11 in Washington Park. Commissioners were asked to take and post event fliers. b. The Community Picnic is scheduled for September 17, 1995 in Washington Park. C. The Recreation Department is now accepting payment for all department activities and programs by Visa and Mastercard. Use of credit cards is convenient and enables registrants with large bills to spread their payments over a longer period of time. City cash handling procedures are improved, since Recreation and Finance Department staffs will handle less money and deposits are made to the City's account electronically, within 24 hours of most transactions. 4.
