Adjournment Next Meeting: Thursday, July 20, 1995 TO: DATE: a STAFF REPORT Honorable Mayor and City Council June 29, 1995 AGENDA ITEM a MTG. DATE SUBMITTEDU By APPROVED BY SUBJECT: Appointment of Advisory Youth Members to Park and Recreation Commission RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the Council appoint Nick Grijalva and Heather Mau as Advisory Youth Members to the Park and Recreation Commission for one year terms, July 5, 1995 to June 30, 1996. BACKGROUND: In December, 1994, the City Council adopted a selection procedure for the two new advisory youth commissioners on the Park and Recreation Commission. Unfortunately, we have not had any success recruiting freshmen or sophomores to serve on the Commission. To date we have received NO eligible candidate applications. Burlingame High School Principal Larry Teshara suggested that we consider two juniors this year since there is no history or track record for the two advisory positions. He indicated that he would recruit two capable juniors for our consideration and that, after one year, we might find it easier to interest younger students. I asked Mr. Teshara to proceed and he recruited Nick Grijalva and Heather Mau, both Burlingame residents and high school juniors, about to become seniors. Recreation Coordinator John Cannon and I interviewed the two young people and were very impressed by them and their interest in our positions. We recommended their appointment to the Park and Recreation Commission and the Commission, at its June 15, 1995 meeting, voted unanimously to recommend their appointment to the City Council. The Commission seemed to be especially impressed with the positive recommendations given the two young people by new commissioner Ed Larios, Burlingame High School P.E. Department Chairman. If the City Council chooses to appoint Nick and Heather on July 5, they can then attend their first Commission meeting on July 20 and be ready to participate fully, starting with the September meeting of the Commission. The appointments should be for one year terms, ending June 30, 1995. Unfortunately, we have not had any success recruiting freshmen or sophomores to serve with your Commission. To date we have received NO eligible candidate applications. BHS Principal Larry Teshara suggested that we consider two juniors this year since there is no history or track record for the two advisory commissioners. He indicated that he would find two capable juniors for our consideration and that after one year we might find it easier to recruit kids. I asked him to go ahead and find two students and he recruited Heather Mau and Nick Grijalva, both Burlingame residents and juniors, about to become seniors. John Cannon and I met with Nick and Heather today and we were convinced that they would both be excellent advisory commissioners. After briefly reviewing the situation with Chairman Don Roberts, it was agreed that we will ask Nick and Heather to attend your June 15 meeting. After you have met with the two of them, you may recommend their approval to the City Council or ask us to take another tack. Recommendation. I recommend that you meet with Heather Mau and Nick Grijalva at your June 15 meeting and then decide whether or not to recommend their appointment to the City Council. attachments: Selection Procedure Commission Candidate Applications (2) Attachment 2 2/9/95 CITY OF BURLINGAME Park and Recreation Commission SELECTION PROCEDURE FOR YOUTH ADVISORY COMMISSION MEMBERS Youth Members will be selected annually in the Spring for a one year term beginning with the first Park and Recreation Commission meeting in July and ending June 30 of the following year. 2.
