MEMORANDUM
March 29, 1996
TO: City Council
City Manager
FROM: John W. Williams
Recreation Director
SUBJECT: Cancellation of Scheduled Park and Recreation Commnission Meeting - March 21,
1996
As a result of a Commission vacancy and two Commissioners being called out of town on
business unexpectedly, the Park and Recreation Commission could not raise a quorum and the
March 21 meeting of the Commission was cancelled.
The three Commissioners, two Youth Advisory Commissioners and staff who were present did
view a video prepared by the League of California Cities entitled "The Cost of Denial." The
video discusses youth violence, its high cost to our society, and some programs underway in
several California cities to provide programs for kids. The video is about 20 minutes.
Commissioners present asked that City Council members be given the opportunity to view the
video at a meeting in the near future. I will be happy to assist with scheduling the viewing of the
video, if the City Council wishes to see it.

Three Burlingame community volunteers were recognized at this year's event for their

Distinguished Professional Award for his many years of dedicated service as a park and recreation
professional.
Volunteers recognized from Burlingame were Clara Crook, for service on behalf of senior
citizens; Daren Schofield, for his work with neighbors and City staff to replant elm trees on
Cambridge and Oxford; and Michael Souza, for producing the popular map of Washington Park
