HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - PR - 1998.12.17MEETING MINUTES Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission Thursday, December 17, 1998 The regular meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission was called to order by Chairman Mike Nilmeyer at 5:32 p.m. in Lounge #1, Burlingame Recreation Center. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Dittman, Heathcote, Larios, Minderman, Muller, Nilmeyer, Piccetti, Youth Advisory Commissioner Warden Commissioners Absent: Youth Advisory Commissioner Lip Staff Present: Parks & Recreation Director John Williams, Recreation Superintendent Randy Schwartz, Recreation Supervisor Tricia Pinney Others Present: None MINUTES Minutes of the November 19, 1998 meeting were approved, as presented. INTRODUCTION OF NEW COMMISSIONERS Chairman Nilmeyer welcomed new Park & Recreation Commissioners Karen Dittman, Dick Minderman and Carol Muller. He urged them to attend the annual Commissioners Dinner in March, 1999. COMMENTS FROM PUBLIC There were no comments from the public. OLD BUSINESS Teen Blue Ribbon Study Committee. Director Williams reported that the City Council created a new permanent Teen Coordinator position at its December 7, 1998 meeting. Superintendent Schwartz described the hiring process that is now underway. It is expected that the new employee should be hired and in place by March or April, 1999. Commissioner Piccetti, Williams and Schwartz described the work of the Committee to date. It is anticipated that the Committee will complete its work and file its final report in the next few months. NEW BUSINESS 1. Anonymous Class User Complaint. Superintendent Schwartz reported that he has identified the writer of a recent complaint letter to the Commission. Schwartz is currently working with the complainant and hopes to have the matter resolved before the January meeting. L REPORTS 1. Parks Division Report. Director Williams noted that the usual winter tree and park maintenance work is now going. During the winter storms to date the City has been fortunate in that no major tree or facility damage has occurred. Williams also reported on the status of the landfill park improvements and reviewed the status of the five playground tot lot renovations --Alpine and Paloma are completed; J Lot and Laguna are planned for Spring, 1999; and the Trenton rehabilitation will be in the 1999-2000 budget. 3. Recreation Division Report. Recreation Superintendent Schwartz highlighted the youth basketball program which is now underway, as well as the very successful City Holiday Tree Lighting program and the Burlingame Avenue Merchants Holiday Faire. He also updated the group on the status of the Burlingame Village Park building improvements. 4. Commissioner Reports. A. Commissioner Larios reported on recent problems with the running track security lights. The project contractor is presently working on the problem. B. Commissioner Minderman asked about the location of City parks. Superintendent Schwartz gave Minderman and the rest of the Commissioners copies of the new Recreation Brochure, which includes descriptions and addresses of all City parks. C. Commissioner Piccetti asked about the status of removal of the Cuernavaca Park picnic structure. Williams reported that Public Works engineering staff has required the installation of a new retaining wall at the location of the shade structure back wall in order to prevent earth slippage from Hunt Drive. The removal project will now occur following the rainy season. D. Chairman Nilmeyer complimented Recreation Supervisor Pinney on her work on the City's Tree Lighting program. Others expressed their appreciation for the high quality of this special event. Nilmeyer also thanked all Commissioners for an excellent job in 1998 and wished holiday greetings to all.
