Playground installations at Alpine Park and Paloma Park were completed. 2. Tree contractor removed six Dutch Elm Disease (DED) trees on Chula Vista Ave. and a dead Pine at Hillside Reservoir. 3. Turf in Washington Park back park was overseeded. 4. All fields were aerated and fertilized. 5. Trees for Fall planting arrived and planting has begun. 6. The City Arborist has been working closely with the sidewalk contractor (working between Easton and Hillside north of Vancouver). Several trees have been removed to accommodate the new sidewalks. Others have been heavily pruned to compensate for root loss. 7. Supervisor Bob Disco and Leadworker Chuck Heimstadt attended an all day ballfield/sports turf maintenance seminar in Hayward. 8. Plantings at Park/Burlingame Ave. were removed and replaced. QUAR'i r RLY REPORT PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT SECOND QUARTER, 1998-99 PROJECT/GOALS STATUS TO DATE COMMENTS Landfill & Bayside Park Construction plans near final; Operator RFP is out; lower deck planning; soccer lites ON Staff is planning operation and maintenance of all facilities. Working with financial consul - tant. Finalizing arrangements to train Park Maintenance Worker at SM Municipal Golf Course. Paloma & Alpine Tot Lots Renovation projects underway Reopening of both playgrounds in October. Cuernavaca Shade Structure Removal Negotiating with a contractor for the removal of structure City staff or landscape contractor will do minimal cleanup/landscaping after structure is removed. Final landscaping and new shade trellis are now budgeted 00-OIFY C.I.P. Budget. New offices at Parks Yard Architect is finalizing plans Improved office space should be ready for Division staff by Spring, 1999. High School Track & Pool Track is finished; Aquatic Center plans hung -up at State Running track (including City's night security lighting) is completed. Aquatic Center architect meets with State school architect 3rd week of October. Summer & Fall Recreation Programs Summer programs completed; Fall programs underway 5,788 enrollments/432 summer classes. Sumner Enrichment (with BSD) has become large, it will be budgeted separately in 1999. Received FAXed enrollments for the first time this Fall. Senior Activities Ongoing activities 238 seniors received summer class discounts. 110 participated in trips. Nutrition program has had lower participation. This appears consistent with Countywide trend. Special Events 4 Music in the Park Concerts; annual City Golf Tournament 4 successful July concerts at Washington Park featuring new musical groups; 96 golfers in City Golf Championship, again cosponsored by Chamber of Commerce. Sports Hosted girls Nor -Cal Softball tournament; successful summer leagues & programs 7 Northern California teams participated in new girls tournament. Many stayed in Burlingame hotels. Only Peninsula city to see an increase in both numbers of adult softball teams/ participants. 100 7th/8th graders participated in new instructional basketball program. Teens Successful summer teen program; Blue Ribbon Teen Committee is meeting 139 young people participated in classes, junior high fun night and PFRN (Police, Fire, Rec night). Blue Ribbon Committee held first two committee meetings. Community Involvement Burlingame Together Recreation Superintendent Schwartz assumed the coordinator role for 1998-99. Tree Work Several support projects Crews worked in support of Public Works sidewalk projects and new Bayside soccer lights. Large Tree Maintenance Annual contract is underway Work under the 1998-99 contract has begun. Timberline is the contractor for this year. Weed & Debris Clearing Hillcrest crews continue work Community Service crews clear weeds and debris from City rights of way. Mills Canvon Trails Summer trail work completed California Conservation Corps crews worked on canyon trails for two weeks this summer.
