MEMORANDUM

John Williams
Cuernavaca Park Basketball Court Changes
Staff is preparing to reconfigure the basketball basket standards in Cuernavaca Park to eliminate
the full length basketball play that some neighbors have complained about in the past. The full
court play prohibits anyone else from using other baskets during the time the full court games are
in progress. Complaints have also been received indicating that, on numerous occasions, groups
of young men have played full court basketball time for several hours at a time with boom boxes
playing loudly and players and spectators drinking alcoholic beverages.
The neighbors asked in the Fall of 1996 that some of the baskets be removed to prohibit full court
basketball play. Since that time, staff has removed basket rims on some of the backstops. Staff
believes that the change has helped eliminate the full court play problem and we are ready to make
the change permanent. Eliminating three of the backstops will not only reduce the maintenance
required on the backstops, but will also make the area appear considerably less cluttered.
We are proposing to eliminate the three backstops numbered #1, #5 and #6 on the attached
diagram. This will allow for three half court games in the future. For younger children, there will
still be an opportunity to play a full court game, on the small cross -court, while others play on the
#1 half court. I believe that our proposal is also what Dr. Raskoff suggested when he and his son
attended the Commission's March meeting.
I would ask that the Commission approve our proposal to remove three basketball standards at
Cuernavaca Park, as shown on the attached diagram.

A6ditional comments:
Yes Group
- Great idea; make it cheap!
- Charge only for snacks or equipment.
- Small donation OK; not required to pay-
- Keep I.D.'s for pool stick useage.
- Good idea; don't allow gang related teens to come in.
Maybe Group
- Good idea; not too many would attend.
- It should be a place for kids to come as an alternative to drugs and alcohol; maybe an
escape for some kids.
- Something like they had in the 50's.
- Restaurant hangout would be great.
No Group
- It should be open to come and go whenever and not too heavily supervised; have good
music and make it free.
- Teens tend to stay in their own groups and don't like going places with other groups.
- Don't try to force the kids to play any sport or participate in activities. Some kids just want to
hang out.
