HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - PR - 1999.01.21MEETING MINUTES Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission `- Thursday, January 21, 1999 The regular meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission was called to order by Chairman Mike Nilmeyer at 7:01 p.m. in Conference Room A, Burlingame City Hall. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Dittman, Heathcote, Larios, Minderman, Muller, Nilmeyer, Piccetti, Youth Advisory Commissioner Warden Commissioners Absent: Youth Advisory Commissioner Lip Staff Present: Parks & Recreation Director John Williams, Recreation Superintendent Randy Schwartz Others Present: None MINUTES Minutes of the December 17, 1998 meeting were approved, as presented. COMMENTS FROM PUBLIC There were no comments from the public. OLD BUSINESS Teen Blue Ribbon Study Committee Appointments. Commissioner Piccetti reported on the January 19 joint meeting of the Teen Blue Ribbon Study Committee with the Burlingame Together leadership group. The two groups are jointly planning the teen workshop scheduled for the Doubletree Hotel on March 6, 1999. 2. Review Landfill Park Plans & Proposed Programs. Director Williams and Superintendent Schwartz walked Commissioners through a review of the Landfill Park improvements and discussed the programs that will be conducted on these new facilities. 3. Review Aquatic Center, Agreement with SMUHSD and Propose Programs. Williams and Schwartz walked Commissioners through a review of the new Burlingame Aquatic Center, discussed the agreement that will control the new center, and discussed programs planned for the facility. NEW BUSINESS Discussion re Ralph M. Brown Act. Staff and Commissioners discussed the information recently provided to the Commission by the City Attorney regarding the Brown Act and the manner in which the Commission is to do its business. 2. Discussion of Commission's Capital Project Priority List. Chairman Nilmeyer reviewed the �— process whereby the Commission develops its annual project priority list. Director Williams will provide the latest proposed 5-Year Capital Improvement Plan for the Commission's information. 3. Discussion of Attendance at Annual California & Pacific Southwest Parks & Recreation Conference in Santa Clara, February 18-20. Director Williams asked that any Commissioners interested in attending the Conference, call him as soon as possible. 4. City Council and Commissioner's Annual Dinner. Chairman Nilmeyer asked that all Commissioners save the night of Friday, March 19 and plan to attend the annual event. REPORTS 1. Capital Improvement Project Updates. A. BYBA Batting Cage in Washingion Park. The project has still not been completed. B. Cuernavaca Park Shade Structure Demolition. Design of the new retaining wall and interim improvements has been completed. This project will move ahead after the rainy season. C. JJ Lowground Renovation. Williams reported that improvement plans and specifications were nearing completion. The project should be out to bid soon. E. Laguna Park Playground Renovation. Williams reported that work will begin on this design soon. Commissioners Larios and Piccetti will serve on the playground advisory committee. F. Village Park Cottage Renovation and Addition. Schwartz reported that plans are nearing completion. The project will be ready to go to bid soon. 2. Parks Division Report. Director Williams stated that there was no new Parks Division report this month. In response to a Commissioner question, Williams briefly reviewed the issues surrounding the proposed renovation of the Broadway Avenue Streetscape and the possible removal of the Broadway Magnolia trees. 3. Recreation Division Report. Recreation Superintendent Schwartz noted that the B. I. S. cafeteria -gymnasium is now complete and City basketball teams are now using the facility. 4. Commissioner Reports. Commissioner Heathcote complimented City staff on the quality and quantity of staff work put into the many capital improvement projects now underway. OA Chairman Nilmeyer asked that a discussion of the annual selection of Commission officers be placed on the February meeting agenda.
