PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT
FIRST QUARTER, 2000-01

COMMENTS
Lagoon trail should be open for use soon; opening of dog exercise park is being planned for
January, 2001; new ballfield grand opening will be planned for March or April, 2001.
All projects are planned for completion in 2001.
Feasibility study will begin immediately; anticipate report for City Council in February or
March, 2001.
All three of these projects are being administered by School District staff. City funded
parking lot is out to bid
Construction of improvements in BART work area (California north of Dufferin) cannot be
started until BART utility work is finished. Tree planting plans will go public soon.
7,246 enrollments/602 summer classes (1,000 more participants than in 2000). Large summer
camp program with 909 participants in 23 camp weeks. Fall: 3,765 registrants in 581 classes.
Friday drop -in program continues to grow -up to 50 participants per week. Increased cost of
meals from County has required a raise in lunch prices to $3.00. Trips are well received.
Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) provided barbecues and publicized youth programs at
Music in the Park series; PFRN had 44 participants.
Summer Camp Treehouse was filled each of the nine weeks of the program. Fall AM
program is again at capacity & 1 year old afternoon program is nearly full.
5 successful July concerts at Washington Park, groups participating were YAC, Art Society,
Historical Society. City Golf Championship again cosponsored by Chamber of Commerce.
New womens soccer (6 teams) and mens softball (10 teams) leagues were full.
Flag football and volleyball underway-156 4th/5th graders & 188 6th-8th graders.
Lap & Rec Swim were well received. Strong polo, aerobics, diving and preschool interest.
Crew work capacity enhanced with new equipment. Three Certified Tree Workers completed
seminar on trimming around electrical hazards.
Timberline is the 2000-01 contractor. Will work on Eucs on Skyline & Burlingame Avenue.
Parks Maintenance Fall sports league underway; Fall sport leagues are using fields on a daily basis. Fragrance garden at Washington Park was
Washington Park Fragrance improved. Certified staff member is conducting new required audit of playground equipment
Garden refurbished; audit at all parks.

Code of Conduct For Players
I pledge to be positive about my youth sports experience and accept
responsibility for my participation by following the Burlingame Park's and
Recreation Department's Code of Conduct for Players
As a youth sports participant:
1) I will encourage good sportsmanship from fellow players, coaches,
officials and parents every game and practice by demonstrating good
sportsmanship.
2) I will attend every practice and game that I can, and will notify my coach
if I cannot.
3) I understand that I am only guaranteed a certain amount of playing time
as specified in the rules unless disciplined by my coach.
4) I will do my very best to listen and learn from my coaches.
5) I deserve to have fun during my sports experience.
6) I will encourage my parents to be involved with my team in some
capacity because it's important to me.
7) I will treat other players, coaches, fans, and officials with respect
regardless of their race, sex or ability.
8) I will do my very best in school.
9) I will remember that sports is an opportunity to learn and have fun.
Consequences:
1) A verbal warning and a written letter of apology.
2) Removal from the program.

Code of Conduct For Parents/Guardians
I pledge to provide positive support, care and encouragement for my child
participating in youth sports by following the Burlingame Parks and
Recreation Department's Code of Conduct for Parents/Guardians.
As a supportive parent:
1) I will encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support
for all players, coaches, and officials at every game, practice or other
youth sports event.
2) I will place the emotional and physical well being of my child ahead of
my personal desire to win.
3) 1 will insist that my child play in a safe and healthy environment.
4) I will support coaches and officials working with my child, in order to
encourage a positive and enjoyable experience for all.
5) I will do my very best to make youth sports fun for my child and their
teammates.
6) I will help my child enjoy the youth sports experience by doing whatever
I can, such as being a respectful fan and supportive parent.
7) I will treat other players, coaches, fans, and officials with respect
regardless of race, sex or ability.
8) I will remember that the game is for youth — not adults.
Consequences:
1) A verbal warning and a written letter of apology.
2) Banishment from all further practices and games, length to be determined
by the city.

I pledge to provide positive support, care and encouragement for children
participating in youth sports by following the Burlingame Parks and
Recreation Department's Code of Conduct for Coaches.
As a successful coach:
1) I will treat each player as an individual, remembering the emotional and
physical development of each participant.
2) I will do my best to provide safe playing situation for all of my players.
3) I will place the emotional and physical well being of my players ahead of
a personal desire to win.
4) I will do my best to organize practices that are fun and challenging for all
my players.
5) I will encourage good sportsmanship by my positive attitude and
encouragement.
6) I will be knowledgeable in the rules of each sport that I coach, and I will
teach those rules to my players.
7) I will remember that I am a youth sports coach, and that the game is for
children not adults.
8) I will remember to have each child participate in every practice and

1) A verbal warning, a written reprimand for their personal file and
placement on probation.
2) Any further problems will result in removal from the program.
