MEMORANDUM
July 11, 2000
TO: Park & Recreation Commission
FROM: John Williams, Parks & Recreation Director
SUBJECT: Scheduling of Golf Classes
Golf Operator Bill VerBrugge and Golf Director of Instruction John Bernstein met with Randy
Schwartz and me following your June Commission meeting and we have reached a mutually
acceptable agreement on the procedures for scheduling golf classes. As you will recall, John
Bernstein spoke to the Commission last month and expressed his concern that Recreation Division
staff was continuing to schedule City golf lessons at locations other than the Burlingame Golf
Center. Our staff had been concerned that the Golf Center teaching staff was not able to teach all
classes which City staff wanted to schedule.
Randy and I noted that Fall classes have again been arranged at the Emerald Hills golf course, as
per our earlier commitment to Emerald Hills. At our meeting, Randy and I agreed, however, that
these will be the last City classes scheduled away from the Burlingame Center and John Bernstein
agreed that his staff would be prepared to teach all City classes next Spring, as per the typical
schedule that we all felt was reasonable.
We further came to agreement on golf class maximum and minimum registrants and staff agreed
to notify the Golf Center at least one week in advance of class registration status so that the golf
teaching staff could reasonably schedule their work.
I am pleased that we were able to resolve this matter amicably. We look forward to a long and
continued pleasant relationship with VB Golf LLC and with the Golf Center instructional staff. It
is clear that all parties concerned are totally committed to providing a high quality golf experience
for Burlingame residents and others.
