HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - PR - 2000.07.20MEETING MINUTES Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission Thursday, July 20, 2000 The regular meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission was called to order by Chairman Ed Larios at 7:00 p.m. in Conference Room A, Burlingame City Hall. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Heathcote, Larios, Lawson, Minderman, Youth Commissioner Zhao Commissioners Absent: Dittman, Erickson, Muller, Youth Commissioner Martindale Staff Present: Recreation Superintendent Schwartz Others Present: Dr. Eugene Gaenslen, 2352 Poppy Drive, Burlingame Dwana Bain, San Mateo Independent Newspaper Former Youth Commissioner Scott Martindale Former Youth Commissioner Diana Warden MINUTES Minutes of the June 15, 2000 meeting were approved, as presented. CEREMONIAL Commissioner Heathcote presented Former Youth Advisory Commissioner Martindale and Chairman Larios presented Former Youth Advisory Commissioner Warden with plaques from the City in appreciation for their service to the community. Larios welcomed new Youth Advisory Commissioner Zhao to the Commission and reminded him to voice his opinions on the various topics which will arise over the next year. COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC There were no comments from the Public. 1. OLD BUSINESS A. Update on Teen Center Project Superintendent Schwartz reported that the City will soon present a contract to DES Architects and Engineers to conduct a feasibility study for the proposed Teen/Community Center. The study will include information on site location, recommended programs, size, parking, cost, etc. and is anticipated to be completed by the middle of February 2001. The study will also provide information on completing the Masterplan of the Recreation Center, which includes the proposed senior citizens wing. B. Youth Advisory Committee Report Youth Advisory Commissioner Zhao and Youth Committee Member Martindale reported that the Committee has been conducting barbecue sales at the Music in the Park concerts as a fundraiser. The Committee has also been designing a logo and will soon have T-Shirts made for the commissioners. C. Report from Parks & Recreation Director Williams re Golf Class Scheduling Schwartz distributed copies of a class schedule that was recently agreed to by Recreation and VB Golf representatives. This schedule will allow all of the Department's golf classes and camps to be held at the Burlingame Golf Center beginning in the Spring, 2001 session. NEW BUSINESS 1"1 A. Discussion of Youth Sports Programs This item was tabled until the next meeting. B. Report on Qpening of Aquatic Center and First Month of Operation Commissioner Heathcote reported that the opening of the Aquatic Center went very well and that the Center is a beautiful venue. Schwartz reported that attendance is doing very well with hundreds of people at the pool each day. There have been a few mechanical issues that are still being worked out and the west bank of lights is not being used so as to avoid disturbing the neighbors on Chatham Road. Schwartz also reported tnat B.H.S. tennis courts are being rebuilt, with an anticipated completion date of August 4, 2000. After the courts are done, the District will administer the parking lot and walkway paving project. C. Discussion re Canceling Regular August Meeting Commissioner Heathcote moved to cancel the Commission's August meeting due to vacation schedules. Commissioner Lawson seconded the motion which passed unanimously. 2. REPORTS A. Capital Improvement Projects Status 1. Bayside Park Projects Superintendent Schwartz reported that the field at the Soccer Center has been treated and is responding well. The Parks Division is plotting the spread of the disease, performing a deep aeration and backfilling with sand to increase the field's drainage. Precautions are being taken to ensure that similar problems do not occur on the lower deck's field. B. Parks Division No report. C. Recreation Division Schwartz reported that the Music in the Park concerts are being held each Sunday in July behind the Recreation Center and that the Division is very busy with Summer registrations, especially with the addition of the Aquatic Center and Golf Center programs. D. Commissioners Commissioner Heathcote mentioned that he had difficulty trying to contact the Department by telephone. Commissioner Minderman asked about the progress of the basketball courts at Ray Park and Pershing Park. Schwartz reported that the Parks Division has received all of the equipment and will soon be installing the new baskets. Commissioner Lawson asked why BYBA was not allowed to use the scooters to drag the infields at their recent tournament. Schwartz responded that BYBA has used the scooter in the past and is still permitted to do so. BYBA just needs to have their representative register as a volunteer with the Parks Division and receive training on how to operate the scooter. E. Recreation Division Revenue Report Presented. F. Parks & Recreation Department Quarterly R port Presented.
