HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - PR - 2000.06.15L�— MEETING MINUTES Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission Thursday, June 15, 2000 The regular meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission was called to order by Chairman Ed Larios at 7:07 p.m. in Conference Room A, Burlingame City Hall. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Commissioners Absent: StaffPresent Others Present: MINUTES Heathcote, Larios, Lawson and Minderman Dittman, Erickson, Muller Parks & Recreation Director John Williams, Recreation Superintendent Randy Schwartz, Recreation Supervisor Mike Blondino, Burlingame Swim Team Coach Walt Cannon John Bernstein, Director of Instruction, Burlingame Golf Center Minutes of the May 18, 2000 meeting were approved, as presented. COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC Burlingame Golf Center Director of Golf Instruction, John Bernstein, asked that Commission and staff review the way that golf classes are scheduled. He was especially concerned that all City sponsored golf lessons be scheduled at the Burlingame Golf Center. Director Williams stated that staff shared Mr. Bernstein's concerns and that discussions will take place on this subject prior to the next meeting of the Commssion. Williams will report back to the Commission on this matter at its July meeting. OLD BUSINESS Update on Teen Center Project. Director Williams reported that three architectural and engineering firms were interviewed by a nine member interview committee on June 6. Commissioner Minderman, Youth Advisory Commissioner Warden and staff members Schwartz and Williams participated in the selection process. By a 7-2 vote, the interview committee recommended that the City Council authorize the hiring of DES Engineering, Redwood City to do the teen site study. DES Engineering was also the firm that proposed the lowest cost to complete the project. The City Council will consider the matter on June 18, 2000. Following the negotiation of a working contract, planning and study could begin within a month. OR 2. Report on Youth Advisory Committee. Recreation Superintendent Schwartz reported on recent Y.A.C. activities. The group has not be particularly active due to the end of school and special spring activities. Y.A.C. members did operate a food Booth at Art in the Park in order to raise money for future teen events. the Y.A.C. will also have a food booth at the five Music in the Park concerts in July. Commissioner Minderman commended staff for its work in providing opportunities for young people in Burlingame to work on Youth and Community issues. He noted that the City is developing a pool of young people who have been well mentored by staff. 3. Annroval of Rental Fees and Policies for Soccer Center and Aquatic Center Superintendent Schwartz presented a proposed schedule of fee with rules and policies for the rental of the various facilities which the City rents to groups or individuals for pubic use. Commissioners reviewed the new Aquatic Center and Soccer Center portions of this document. It was the consensus of the Commission that the policies and fees, as proposed by staff, were appropriate. NEW BUSINESS - There was no new business to come before the Commission. REPORTS 1. Capital Improvement Project Updates. A. Director Williams reported that work is progressing on the lower deck improvements at the landfill site and that the ballfield, dog exercise park and Sanchez Lagoon trail are now on target for a September completion date. The 120 day maintenance period will require that athletic activities at the new ballfield and dog exercise park be delayed until Spring. The Sanchez Lagoon trail should be ready for use in September. B. Superintendent Schwartz reported that the County Health Department had given the OK earlier in the day for the Aquatic Center Opening on June 17. Commissioners are urged to attend the grand opening event. Schwartz introduced Recreation Supervisor Mike Blondino. Blondino described his duties with the pool and the aquatics staff. Blondino has been the lead person in ordering equipment for the Aquatic Center. Schwartz introduced Swim Team Coach Walt Cannon. Cannon reported on his activities in preparing for the development of a swim team and water polo and Masters Swim programs. Masters swimmers and water polo participants will begin workouts next week. Tryouts for the youth swim team are scheduled to begin on Monday. 2 2. Parks Division Report. Director Williams reported that summer part time help is now in place and the parks and tree crews are very busy. The Avon Breast Cancer 3-day march will come through Burlingame on Saturday, July 29. March organizers have surveyed the Pershing Park neighbors and neighbors have indicated their support for a rest stop in Pershing Park on July 29. 3. Recreation Division Report. Superintendent Schwartz reported on the 2000 Art in the Park event held June 10 and 11. A good time was had by all. He noted that Music in the Park concerts will be held in Washington Park each Sunday during July, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Concerts are free and open to the public. He also reported on the recent Pre School Graduation at Village Park and on the summer camps now underway. Schwartz also described the Police, Fire and Recreation Night program (PFRN) and urged Commissioners to drop by the Friday night program at Burlingame Intermediate School. Commissioner Lawson asked some questions about the organization of the PFRN program and Schwartz responded. 4. Commissioner Reports. a. Commissioner Heathcote indicated his support of the PFRN program and other similar programs which help build the community. He encouraged the development of more programs like PFRN. b. Chairman Larios asked some specific questions about Golf Center operations and Director Williams responded.
