Shorebird Sanctuary - Mrs. Luana Hammett VII ADJOURNMENT '1 '1 Shorebird Sanctuary In 1974, the City of Burlingame authorized 150 feet of city - owned marshland area between Burlway and Mahler Road, to be designated as a shorebird sanctuary. A volunteer group, headed by Mrs. Luana Hammett, cleaned and cleared the area of debris.and weeds. The Rotary Club of Burlingame donated a sign;and a stone bench and the planting of trees were added as a scout project. The first 3 to 4 years of the Shorebird Sanctuary project the Audubon Society conducted "Bird Walks" for interested groups. The area designated is a perfect refuge for the shorebirds. It is one of four "Flyways" in the country. The shorebirds (as many as 11-15 species at one time) can be seen, 2 to 3 hours after high tide, feeding on the mud flats. Some of the birds in this area migrate all the way from South America. Many of the shorebirds live in the San Francisco Bay Area year round; 50% of the ducks wintering in the San Francisco Bay Area remain. Halophytes are the only kind of plant life that can grow in the salty climate of the marsh land. Cord grass is the "staff of life" for the wildlife in the marsh and grows abundantly. Pickleweed is another kind of plant observed in the area. The marshland is used for 2 or 3 day stop-overs,in the shorebird migration habit, for rest, refuge, and food. Of the 276 miles of coastline only 5 are publicly owned. The Shorebird Sanctuary is located off of Airport Blvd., and can be visited at any time in any kind of weather.
