HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - BC - 1982.04.01BURLINGAME BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION ice,, April 1, 1982 The regularly scheduled Burlingame Beautification Commission meeting was called to order Thursday, April 1, 1982, at 7:35 p.m. in the City Hall by Chairman Bowling. ROLL CALL Present: Chairman Bowling, Commissioners Bacon, Disco, Hagstrom, Levy, Perry and Park Director Quadri. Absent: Commissioner Carbon (excused) Guest: Ranger Ron Weaver, Litter Coordinator Chairman Bowling dispensed with the usual agenda to allow Ranger Ron Weaver to do his presentation on the Great California Resource Rally. THE GREAT CALIFORNIA RESOURCE RALLY Ranger Ron Weaver spoke to the Commission about the events relating to the Great California Resource Rally April 19-25 and the City's involvement. He also passed out 2 flyers on the Rally and one on California's War on Waste Charter System. He encouraged anyone to contact him at 363-4020 if they had any questions. MINUTES The March 4 minutes should be corrected in Commissioner Disco's re- port to read "Commissioner Disco complimented the Commissioners'Din- ner and Commissioner Hagstrom suggested a 'thank you' should be sent." The minutes were approved as corrected. CORRESPONDENCE Letter from the Resources Agency of California in Sacramento congra- tulating Burlingame on being named Tree City USA. 3/6/82 Photocopy of letters sent to Laurence Costello, Alex Graham, and Allan Hammer, (by Director Quadri) thanking them for their "informa- tive and thoroughly enjoyable" presentations at the Spring Garden Seminar. 3/10/82 REPORTS Commissioner Bacon Commissioner Bacon was surprised that the Burlingame Dumps doesn't recycle newspaper. Commissioner Hagstrom indicated that if the news- papers are stacked and tied and set on top of the garbage can, the bundles will be taken to the recycling plant in San Mateo. At this time,Director Quadri reported to the Commission that by mid April the Burlingame Dumps will be open to Burlingame residents only on weekends only and that nothing larger than a pickup truck will be allowed. This will allow the Burlingame Dumps to remain open for 2 more years. San Mateo will close their dumpsite at the end of April with the commencement of a composting plant soon after. Commissioner Bacon also reported on the glass in the lot by the Caboose Restaurant along California Drive. Commissioner Perry Commissioner Perry called the Pacific Telephone Company re the un- sightly pole in the Fragrance Garden at Washington Park. Nat Hack- enburg of the phone company indicated that the pole is also owned by P.G. & E. and is under jurisdiction of the "Joint Pole Authority". P.G. & E. will be sending someone out to look at the pole. Commissioner Perry brought the article and picture of Director Quadri receiving the award presented to the Burlingame Park Department for design excellence on the Airport Boulevard Intersection. Commissioner Hagstrom Commissioner Hagstrom reported that the parking lot by Sam's Sand- wiches and the alleyway behind the bars has trash all over. Direc- tor Quadri will contact Public Works. Commissioner Disco Commissioner Disco reported that last week's Boutique had the announce- ment of the Burlingame Beautification Commission meeting date and time. Commissioner Disco also reported that she was in error, that the trash had not been cleaned up near the S.P. tracks at Murchison; that, in fact, it Tooked like more trash had been dumped there. Director Quadri, again, will contact Public Works. A "thank you" letter to Mayor Mangini re the Commissioners Dinner was sent by Commissioner Disco. Commissioner Levy Burlingame Intermediate School has won the April Clean Campus inspec- tion. Director Quadri A new bus stop has been erected in Ray Park on E1 Camino. However, the old bus stop has not been removed. Children's art on Burlingame Avenue and Park Rd. (in front of Simp- son's) has been vandalized over the years and needs to be redone by school children. Commissioner Hagstrom suggested the fall would be a good time for the children to do a project such as this. Director Quadri will contact Dale Perkins (former Art teacher) for ideas on getting this project instituted. Mrs. Helen Riser contacted the Park Department re having a tree planted in memory of Councilman Dave Martin's wife. The Commission agreed that memorials such as these should be continued. Commissioner Bacon recommended that an official list be kept of the location of the memorial trees and names:of the individuals memorialized. The Commission felt the decision as to the planting location should be left to the discretion of the Park Director. Director Quadri will contact Mrs. Riser regarding their memorial gift. `1 1,- OLD BUSINESS Director Quadri reported that the Landscape Award will be presented to Anco Properties at the Chamber Luncheon on April 20th. Alpine P, wards will engrave the award plaque. Director Quadri will make contact with someone from Anco to receive the award. Director Qua- dri will notify the Commission on the details of the award presen- tation. Commissioner Hagstrom congratulated Director Quadri on the Spring Garden Seminar. The Commission agreed that it was an excellent program. There being no New Business, Chairman Bowling adjourned the meeting at 8:40 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Chester E.
