HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - BC - 1982.03.04BURLINGAME BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION March 4, 1982 The regularly scheduled Burlingame Beautification Commisssion meeting was called to order Thursday, March 4, 1982, at 7:30 p.m. in the City Hall by Chairman Bowling. ROLL CALL Present: Commissioner Bowling, Carbon, Disco, Hagstrom, Levy, Perry and Park Director Quadri., Absent: Commissioner Bacon (excused) MINUTES: The February 4, 1982 minutes should be corrected under NEW BUSINESS, third paragraph, to read: "Director Quadri reported that the Saratoga Horticultural Foundation is asking cities ,"etc . . . and that, "Director Quadri reported that the Garden Study Club has $1000 available for a project and that the commission should a 1 for those un s for this project. The minutes of the February 4, 1982 meeting were approved as corrected. CORRESPONDENCE: Letter from Willa Sexton presenting a check in the amount of 00 from the Garden Study Club to purchase fifteen oak trees to be planted for the Arbor Day Ceremonies. (1/21/82) Letter(s) from Director Quadri to Laurence Costello, Alexander Graham, and Allan Hammer/Clifford Jones, Jr., confirming and thanking them for their acceptance to be speakers at the Spring Garden Seminar.(2/11/82) Letter from Chairman Bowling to Mayor Mangini inviting him to the Arbor Day Ceremonies and requesting his "involvement in the program as Mayor of Burlingame with a short.talk to the students." (2/11/82) Letter from Director Quadri to Mrs. Don Nuckels, Lighthouse for the Blind, thanking that organization for their generous donation ($500) to the Helen D'Arcy Fragrance Garden. (2/11/82) Letter from Director Quadri to Mrs. Willa Sexton, Conservation Chair- man of the Garden Study Club of the Peninsula,thanking the club for their generous ($100) donation for the purchase of 15 oak trees for Mills Canyon. (3/3/82) REPORTS Chairman Bowling Chairman Bowling informed the commission of his new telephone number. Commissioner Hagstrom Commissioner Hagstrom indicated that she wrote a letter to the Garden Stud Club re uestin funds for the purchase of selected trees,for a conducte stu y, rom t e Saratoga Horticultural Foundation. Some of these trees could be planted at the entrance to Burlingame at Murchison. Commissioner Hagstrom stated that the E1 Camino Beautification should extend from Murchison to Ray Drive. Commissioner Disco Commissioner Disco complimented the Commissioners Dinner and indicated `.. a "thank you" note should be sent. The commission agreed. Commissioner Disco will write the "thank you". Commissioner Disco reported that she received a complaint that the Bayside Bike Trail was a mess. Director Quadri reported that the complaint probably referred to the mud which is always a problem at this time of year. Commissioner Levy Burlingame Intermediate School has won the March Clean Campus Inspection. Commissioner Levy and Commissioner Hagstrom will be inspecting the cam- puses at the end of March for the April competition. Commissioner Carbon The Boy Scouts ere contacted by Commissioner Carbon re their partici- pation in the,1w982 Resource Rally. The Boy Scouts will beat a Camperee the weekend of April 24th but Commissioner Carbon has encouraged the Cub Scouts to attend the Resource Rally. Commissioner Carbon was presented the list of the Girl Scout Council of the San Francisco Bay Area by Director Quadri; Commissioner Carbon will be contacting the Girl Scouts re the Resource Rally. Director Director Quadri Quadri met with Ron Weaver, Litter Control Coordinator, and John Wilms, Chairman of the Millbrae Beautification Commission to dis- cuss projected activities revolving around 1982 Great California Resource Rally. Director Quadri reported on the following items; �-' 1) Schools will be asked to submit posters by 3/26/82. 2) Twenty-seven high schools will be provided with dump- sters for a glass collection; school who has the most weight in glass will be awarded. (Still checking to see if Owens-Illinois will provide dumpsters.) 3) Evening presentations are planned for 4 areas on the Peninsula dealing with Solid Waste. Burlingame and Millbrae would be combined and would have the presen- tation on Wednesday, April 21. Director Quadri will check to see if the Lion's Hall can be used for this event. 4) A bus tour of the Solid Waste Facilities is scheduled for April 21st. 5) Saturday, April 24th a Clean Sweep down E1 Camino has been scheduled throughout 12 cities. Cal Trans will provide bags and pickup. 6) On April 24th, following the Clean Sweep, there will be a Rally Picnic at Goyote Point Park. There will be free admission and refreshments for Rally partici- pants. Another meeting with Ron Weaver has been scheduled on March 16th at 2:00 p.m. to 'firm -up' plans. It has been requested that a representative from the Burlingame Beautification Commission be in attendance. Commis- sioner Perry volunteered to meet with Ron Weaver and John Wilms. Com- missioner Carbon suggested participants in the Clean Sweep be asked to provide their own gloves and that the Police Department be contacted to provide traffic barriers. Director Quadri reported on the article in the March 3, 1982 Burlingame Leader "Burlingame named 'Tree City U.S.A."' '1 AW REPORTS Director Quadri (cont'd.) Director Quadri reported the trash on California Drive at Trousdale to Public Works. Public Works has been in touch with the Water District. Commissioner Disco added that there had been an improvement in the area. The trees by Bekins on Broadway will be trimmed by the City's tree crew. OLD BUSINESS Last minute details of the March 6, Spring Garden Seminar were discussed. Director Quadri indicated that the speakers, room, projector and screen were all set. Arrangements will be made for a coffee pot to be availa- ble and coffee cups. The 'Young Roots' program for Arbor Da.y will have over 60 children parti- cipating. Due to the lack of availability of large enough -Live Oak trees, Holly Oaks will be planted. The area is large enough for only 10 trees. An additional Live Oak tree will be planted as a memorial to Joseph E. Harvey, Sr. Vice -Chairman Hagstrom will make the opening remarks in Chairman Bowlings absence. The ceremony will begin up on Mills Canyon Court followed by the planting in the Canyon. NEW BUSINESS Commissioner Di time. Director Quadri has submitted 2 proposals for Capital Improvements for the 1982-1983 budget. #1 priority is for Laguna and Cuernavaca Park Improvements and #2 priority is for E1 Camino Beautification from Mur- chison to Ray Drive (a sign at the city entrance and the landscaping of the median islands). Commissioner Disco brought the article in the Boutique & Villager on historical buildings and the preservation thereof, to the attention of e commission. Commission Hagstrom announced the Affordable Housing Seminar - Solution to the Housing Crisis that will be held on March 13th, at the College of San Mateo.
