Subject: 1983 Membership and Program Development
Litter Control Advisory Committee
Meeting Date: January 12, 1983
In 1978 the County of San Mateo received grant funding to
implement a county -wide litter control program throughout
our 19 cities and unincorperated neighborhoods. During this
period, the Regional Planning Committee and this advisory
group had provided guidelines for the program and made
several recommendations to the Board of Supervisors.
Grant funds were deleted from the State budget in June of
1981 and the scope of the program has been appropriately
reduced. However the Committee remains committed to providing
information regarding solutions to controlling litter and
other related issues. We would like to take this opportunity
to invite concerned representatives to meet with us in January
as we map -out our program's guideleines for 1983.
Controlling litter involves a wide -range of activities: placing
adequate receptacles, scheduling effective clean-ups, classroom
presentations, office white paper recovery collection, adopting
new waste -related ordinances and changing peoples' attitudes
regarding "litter -bugs." Litter problems are normally very
localized and so are there solutions. This is why we are making
a special appeal for your community's participation in this
program.
We have invited Steve Kolb from the California State (Solid) Waste
Management Board staff to attend ---he is responsible for this
year's Great California Resource Rally and networking local com-
munities commited to waste control ---and Sherrie Katz, the Bay Area's
1983 Rally coordinator.
If you would like additional information regarding the Litter
Control Advisory committee or the January meeting, please contact
County Ranger Ron Weaver at 363-4020 or 359-1881. The meeting
will begin at 7:00 p.m, at the San Mateo Union High School District
Offices, 650 North Delaware Street in San Mateo just north of the
high school. We hope to meet your designee there.
Sincerely, /
Nicholas Carpel er Al Teglia
