Califprnia 94010 Phone 344.6386 MEMORANDUM June 7, 1984 To: Park, Recreation and Beautification Commission From: Ray Wagner Re: Request For Policy Approval The Recreation Department has been enforcing a no amplified music policy in the park system for the best interest of the con=ity. . I would like the commission to know that our department is planning three Sunday concerts that are being advertised as 'Music in the Park'. These concerts are being held in the Recreation Center Patio and not in the park. We are adhering to the following rules: 1. Must be a City sponsored activity 2. Can only be held on the Recreation Center Patio 3. Limited to the hours of 12 noon to 4:00 pm 4. Limited to one hour in length, each day 5. Must have the Director's approval at least 30 days in advance. The schedule of the planned entertainment is as follows: Sunday, July 15 2:00 pm "Silver Lining" - 4 piece band. Glenn Miller, Dixieland and Big Band Music. Sunday, July 22 2:00 pm "Ocean Express" - Top 40 (8 piece band) Sunday, September 23 2:00 pm "Nautilus" - Contemp- porary (8 piece band) The first group will have no amplification other than a micro- phone. The second and third groups are Navy bands from Treasure Island and although they will be amplified, should provide good family entertainment. We do not believe that providing the three planned one -hour performances will be in conflict with our past practices. RW:pa R7 m RECEIVED JUN J-1984 CITY OF BURLINGiAME Dear Blzrlingame Resident; Mr. & Mrs. Donald F. Hugo 712 Linden Ave, Burlingame, Calif. 94010 June 3, 1984 SHOULD n MINOR HAVE ACCESS TO, OR BE ABLE TO PURCHASE SEXUJ-11.1,1. EXPLICIT LITERATURE OR MATERIAL ON BURLINGAME' S PUBLIC STREETS AND SIDEWALKS?? We as concerned citizens and parents would like to bring to your attention that this type of material is available and has in the past been purchased by some of Burlingame's children from two newspaper stands located on the public sidewalk in front of both U. S. Post Offices in Burlingame. These streets and sidewalks are traveled every day by Burlingame children, public school students and students from private schools. As eleven year residents of Burlingame we have always enjoyed the city's image of quality, in it's residential areas, it's schools, shopping malls, but most importantly in it's people. We strongly believe this quality should continue. We believe it is extremely inadvisable to continue to allow the sale of the "SPECTATOR", the "PLEASURE GUIDE", or any similar materials on the public streets and sidewalks of Burlingame where minors have access to them. The Public Works Director reported to the council that the Park Department and Engineering will identify those plants that were permanently damaged from the repaving and require that the contractor pay for their replacement. We will also try to "tighten" our specifications for future repaving to reduce this type of damage. Thank you for your concern. Dennis Argyres City Manager fg cc: Public Works Director Parks Director
