HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - BC - 1984.12.06PARK, RLtREATION, AND BEAUTIFICATION COMPASSION December 6, 1984 The meeting of the temporarily formed Park, Recreation, & Beautification Commis- sion meeting was called to order Thursday, December 6, 1984 at 7:35 pm in the City Hall by Chairman Graham. -ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Commissioners Bowling, Carbon, Disco, Graham, Hagstrom, Huajardo, Hughes, and Lindstrom. Absent: Commissioner May Staff Director Quadri and Director Wagner 'MINUTES Minutes of the November 1, 1984 meeting were approved as submitted. CORRESPONDENCE Letter from Patricia Foley Public Relations on behalf of Benihana of Tokyo thanking the City for awarding them the 1984 Beautification Award for landscaping excellence. REPORTS-- $14,066.32 was collected in the month of November bringing the total accumulation AGNER to $150,894.37. The Spring Recreation Brochure has been sent to the printer; the cover features several Heritage trees in the City of Burlingame. The re -seeding of Burlingame High School Soccer Fields has been approved by the City Council. AYSO uses these fie di s as their main locations for games. Total cost will be $2,000 of which AYSO will contribute $600 for the renovation of both fields in that location as a thank you to the school district for use. The Pershing School site is for sale. The Council will discuss the City's possible purchase of that lot at their January study session. Several possibilities of use include 1) leveling existing building and developing a park 2) using existing facility as additional recreation facility leaning toward senior programming. Com- missioner Hagstrom moved that a letter be sent to Council supporting the purchase of Pershing School site; seconded. Motion carried with 1 abstention. Senior Nutrition Center will open the first week in February at the Recreation Center and will be operating each Tuesday and Thursday. Meals are provided by Chope Hospital for a $1.00/person donation; balance is covered by County with the City providing the building and programming. Participants must be 60 years of age or older. Program will be evaluated at the end of 6 months to determine who is making use of the program, if there are any other needs, and the expansion of the days. UADRI The Burlingame City Council reorganized at their December 3, 1984 meeting as follows: Mayor - R. David Martin; Vice Mayor - Victor A. Mangini; Councilmember - Irving S. Amstrup; Councilmember - Gloria H. Barton; Councilmember - Frank J. Pagliaro, Jr. REPORTS-- Commissioners NAGSTORM The Broadway Post Office lot needs cleanup as well as the Crocker Bank and Cheese Please parking lots. Clean Campus Inspection for the month of November was awarded to Burlingame Interme- diate School. There is a noted difference in the appearance of the campuses since the program began several years ago. One more person is needed for the Burlingame commission for the inspections. F HUAJARDO Commissi zens of the days that the street sweepers would be in each neighborhood so resi- dents can move vehicles. Commissioner Graham stated that a Public Works Commis- sion should be established to handle these types of complaints. Commissioner Hua- jardo moved that a letter be sent to Council stating: In the interest of keeping Burlingame as beautiful as possible, a street sweeping schedule be established and the citizens be informed of the schedule for their areas; and, that a copy of the article in the Dec. 5, 1984 leader, "Keep Off Street for Sweeper" (in reference to the City of Millbrae's street sweeping schedule) be attached. OLD BUSINESS Tree Replacement on ECR The City was able to purchase 55/5-gallon Eucalyptus Bancroftii at a bargain rate from Saratoga Horticulture. Caltrans will purchase trees from the City and will plant as replacements are needed on ECR. The recently purchased supply will last for several years. Severe pruning of Sycamores/Trinity Lutheran Church - ECR Trees at Trinity Lutheran Churc were severely pruned after having received a let- ter last year warning Trinity that there should be no further pruning on these trees according to City codes. Representatives of Trinity have indicated to the City Attorney that the gardener acted on his own. Commissioner Bowling moved that the naximum fine be imposed on the individual who pruned the trees; seconded. Motion was carried unanimously. AEW BUSINESS Commissioner Huajardo suggests that the citizens be reminded to cut back hedges and/ or trees encroaching sidewalks. Director Quadri informed the Commission that a warning notice can be sent to violators if an address is reported to the department. After a brief discussion, the Commission recommended that information regarding this matter be published in the Summer Recreation Brochure.
