BURLINGAME BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION January 5, 1984 The regularly scheduled Burlingame Beautification Commission meeting was called to order Thursday, January 5, 1984, 7:30 PM in the City Hall by Chairman Carbon. ROLL CALL Present: Chairman Carbon, Commissioners Bacon, Bowling, Disco, Hag - storm, and Director Quadri. Guests: Dennis Argyres, City Manager and Ray Wagner, Director of Recreation. MINUTES The minutes of the November 3, 1984 meeting were approved as submitted. COMBINING COMMISSIONS Because of the presence of the City Manager and Director of Recreation, NEW BUSINESS was considered first. The City Manager spoke to the Commission on the possibility of com- bining the Beautification Commission with the Park and Recreation Com- mission and solicited their comments. The Commission discussed the matter and asked questions of the City Manager, Director Quadri, and Director Wagner. The Commission would like to schedule a combined meeting with Park and Rec. in February. COMMUNICATIONS Copy of letter to Richard Haderer of Trinity Lutheran Church inform- ing them that "no further pruning is to be done on the trees without first obtaining a permit". Copy of memo from Director Quadri to Beautification Commission re re- cent storm damage. REPORTS Commissioner Disco reported that the area around 50/50 Muffler at the corner of Peninsula & ECR is unkept. Director Quadri will report to Public Works re debris an/or grease on sidewalks and City right-of- ways. Commissioner Disco sent letters to residents at 1049 and 1053 ECR expressing the Commissions commendations re the planting of shrubs and flowers in the parking strip. Commissioner Ha strom indicated that Stanaways parkin lot is much cleaner, but the City parking lot behind rocker Bank is littered. Director Quadri will alert Public Works. Commissioner Bacon reported that the new newsracks are very nice. The Commission agreed that a letter of appreciation be sent to retired Commissioner Nita Perry for her diligence in the replacement of the newsracks. Director Quadri will suggest that the City Council send a letter of commendation. ECR Beautification project has gone to bid; bid opening will be January 17. Commissioner Hagstrom requested a letter of progress be written to the Garden Study Club on the expenditure of their donation. After bids have been accepted, Director Quadri will send a letter of pro- gress to the Garden Study Club. OLD BUSINESS The Commission discussed the continuation of the Clean Campus Award. Commissioners Bowling and Carbon feel it is not an appropriate item for the Beautification Commission to be involved with, i.e., the ordinance governing the BBC is more oriented toward the preservation of street trees and the beautification of public lands. Commissioners Disco, Hagstrom, and Bacon feel the program is a worthwhile project, i.e., it shows the students that the community is interested in them and gives the students pride in their environment. The Commission decided to continue the program through the year. Commissioner Hag- strom volunteered to attend the monthly inspections. The Arbor Day celebration on Friday, March 9 will take place at Bur- lingame Village Park. Chairman Carbon asked that the Directors of the CCC's also be invited this year. Reservations at the Recreation Center have been confirmed for March 10.
