September 5, 1985
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to
order on Thursday, September 5, 1985 at 5:35 P.M. in the City Hall by Chairman
Gfir.

resent: ommissioners Bowling, Disco, Gilmore, Hagstrom, and Shevchuk.
Absent: Commissioners Cady and Carbon.

Minutes of the August 1, 1985 meeting were approved as submitted.
'CORRESPONDENCE
Letter from Laster Maddox, 404 Bayswater, requesting removal of the female Gingko
tree because "The fruit smells like dog dung."
Memo to City Manager from Director Quadri re the Beautification Commission's
recommendation to Council that the Park Department continue it current method of
sycamore pruning on a 4 year cycle; that P.G.&E continue its current practice
with close monitoring by the Park Department; and that the City explore a long
range replacement program with P.G.&E. for those trees which interfere with pri-
mary power lines.
Notice posted announcing the Park & Recreation Commission Public Hearing on the
Pershing Site, August 15, 1985, 7:30 P.M. in the Council Chambers.
REPORTS
SHF—Commissioner Shevchuk inquired what can be done to encourage the Le Gare Rest-
aurant (located in the Broadway S.P. station) to beautify the exterior of the
building. Director Quadri indicated that the City of Burlingame has no juris-
diction over private properties, but that a letter could go out from the Beauti-
fication Commission. The Commission agreed to send a letter to Le Gare request-
ing beautification of the site.
BOWLING The E1 Camino Real planting of Eucalyptus by Caltrans is going very well. Direc-
tor Quadri added that a total of 19 trees has been planted to date.
Commissioner Bowling indicated that this would be his last meeting as next month
he will be out-of-town, and stated his pleasure with serving on the Commission
for the last 6 years. The Commission wished him well.
HAGSTROM Commissioner Hagstrom reported that the 1300 block of Vancouver has no street
trees and suggests a letter from the Park Department be sent to the residents
informing them of the street tree program. Director Quadri indicated that a let-
ter to the 1300 block of Vancouver could go out from the department.
QUADRI The renovation work on the S.P. Station has resumed; the State has allocated
additional funds to complete the project. Upon completion of the building con-
struction, landscape plans will be submitted to the Beautification Commission
for final approval.
REPORTS
QUADRI - (Cont.'d)
The Park Department has received the IBM - PUT Computer. The Street Tree Inven-
tory will go on-line by the middle of September.
Eucalyptus Tree Pruning of $42,000 will be performed by Econo Tree. Econo Tree
just finished a contract with the City of Redwood City and were given a good re-
commendation. Company also meets all bond requirements.
Tree Trimmer Leadworker testing will begin in 2 weeks.
Pershing School Site - anything of value was removed by City departments. Demo-
lition procedures have been started.
OLD BUSINESS
Landscape Award Selection - Seabreeze 1, located at 700 Airport Blvd. will be
awarded the 1985 Landscape Award at the Community Dinner on October 12, at the
Crowne Plaza.
Mission Bells on ECR - Commissioner Disco inquired what�if anything,can be done
to return the bells to their brass finish. Director Quadri referred the boy
scouts to Caltrans, but Caltrans seemed uninterested. Director Quadri will
give Commissioner Disco individuals to be contacted at Caltrans.
NEW BUSINESS
Tree re lacenent @455 Chatham - Trees were illegally removed and homeowner has been
told
that he will ave to pay for replacement. Director Quadri stated that since
the 400 block of Chatham is lined with Sycamore trees he would like the replace-
ment to be a Sycamore in order to maintain the character of the neighborhood. The
Commission agreed that the replacement of a Sycamore would be a suitable choice.
Tree removal at 404 Bayswater - Resident requests removal of female Gingko tree
due to the smel y' fruit that the tree produces and drops. Commissioner Hagstrom
moved that the City cooperate in removal and replacement with a male Gingko tree
instead. Seconded; motion carried unanimously.
Clean Campus Inspections - Commissioner Hagstrom will be contacting the Millbrae
Beautification Committee. Commissioner Gilmore will volunteer inspection of the
campus.
Meeting was adjourned at 6:45 P.M.
