June 6, 1985
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to
order.on Thursday, June 6, 1985 at 5:35 P.M. in the City Hall by Chairman Car-
bon.

Absent: Commissioner Shevchuk

MINUTES Minutes of the May 2, 1985 meeting were approved as submitted.
CORRESPONDENCE
Letter from the Beautification Commission to Mr. & Mrs. Frank Milliken, owners
of 1045 E1 Camino Real thanking them for the "planting of shrubs and flowers in
the parking strip" at said property and that "this lovely work is appreciated."
REPORTS
QUADRI Another Elm in front of City Hall has been tested for DED: we are waiting to
hear the results of those tests; the City is losing Elm trees at a rate of 4-5
a year due to DED.
Caltrans is purchasing 25 Eucalyptus Bancroftii from the Park Department and
will begin replacing eucalyptus that were removed over a year ago.
The Park Department was approved as submitted to the Council, including con-
tract tree work and the purchase of a computer.
REPORTS --Commissioners
GILMORE B.I.S. and Taylor Intermediate tied for the May Clean Campus inspection. Taylor
won the Clean Campus award for the 9 -8 sc oo year.
Hiked the trail at Mills Canyon and reported on areas that could be improved on
the trail; as the trai is now, Commissioner Gilmore feels the area would be too
difficult for many seniors to hike.
CADY Walked through Mills Canyon with Dr. Freedman to assess improvement needs to the
trail; volunteers for cleanup are available but need to be organized; Dr. Freed-
man will be contacting Commissioner Cady for cleanup; Park Department has rail-
road ties and old telephone poles that can be used for trail building.
HAGSTORM Area around the Post Office at Broadway is unkempt -- papers and weeds are all
around Post Office. Director Quadri willtalk to the Chamber re the Beautifica-
tion Commission's concern re cleanup of the entire business area.
P CO The S.P. station at Broadway needs paintin -- Director Quadri will find out
who is responsible for the station at roadway.
It has been re orted to Commissioner Disco that it appears that 4 pine trees
at rank in coo may ave a ee a infestation. Director Quadri willcheck
and inform the proper authority.

- 'LING Commissioner Bowlin suggested that benches be laced in the park for weddi
so guests wou d ave a p ace to sit during the ceremony. erector Quadri w
discuss with Director Wagner and report back to Commission.
CARBON Vandalism at Washington Park is very bad and he is wondering if putting a fence
around Washington Park would be helpful. Commissioner Bowling indicated that
it is the same youths doing the vandalism. Director Quadri indicated that
undercover police have patrolled the park and they end up picking up the same
kids.
OLD BUSINESS
P.G.&E. Trimming of Sycamores. The Commission discussed the present pruning
standards of the sycamore trees in the City. Items discussed were: balanced
pruning over pruning for safety; cost to the City; placing power lines under-
ground; concern for residents who would be opposed to having their sycamore
topped; removal of sycamores growing underneath power lines; and pollarding.
Commissioner Bowling requests that the representative from P.G.&E. be at the
July commission meeting. Director Quadri will make arrangements for the re-
presentative to be present. The commission will attempt to have a recommenda-
tion for Council by the August 1, 1985 meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
July Beautification Commission Meeting. Due to the July Beautification Commis-
sion falling on a holiday, the meeting will be held on Thursday July llth,
5:30 P.M. at City Hall.
Appointment of Landscape Award Committee. Commissioners Cady, Disco, and Gil-
more volunteered for the Landscape Award Committee. Commissioner Shevchuk was
also appointed. Recipient of the award will be decided at the August Commis-
sion meeting. Certificates of Appreciation will be given to those who were
worthy of nomination.
Fragrance Garden. Chairman Carbon mentioned the recent Times article about
the Fragrance -Garden and recommended a letter of appreciation be sent to
California McRoskey for her work in the garden.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:05 P.M.
