`,. The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to
order on Thursday, May 2, 1985 at 5:30 P.M. in the City Hall by Chairman Car-
bon.

MINUTES Minutes of the April 4, 1985 meeting were approved as submitted.
CORRESPONDENCE
-der to Mr. Gary Hellman, 221 Bayswater, from the Director of Parks inform-
ing him that the Commission authorized a permit to be issued to remove and re-
place the walnut tree at owner's expense.
Letter from Marjorie Taylor, 701 Burlingame Ave., requesting that Dr. Bill Freed-
man be allowed to make a presentation on the current condition of the Mills Can-
yon Park and of the immediate needs of the Ed Taylor Trail.

HAGSTROM The Clean Campus inspection for April was awarded to Taylor Intermediate School.
NEW BUSINESS
In order to accommodate the guests the agenda item Mills Canyon Park was dis-
cussed at this time.
Dr. Bill Freedman displayed a map of the Mills Canyon Park indicating the imme-
diate needs of the Ed Taylor %i Dr. Freedman reported that he has "friends"
and knows of volunteers who would help build and clean trails. He suggested that
perhaps the Chamber of Commerce and/or the City could provide a picnic or re-
freshments of some sort for a cleanup day. Director Quadri said the Park Depart-
ment could provide trucks for trash removal and tools such as shovels and rakes.
The Park Department would also continue to spray trails for poison oak; cut trees,
and if necessary obtain the trail builder from the County. Chairman Carbon
indicated that the Beautification Commission would provide refreshments for a
workday.
Director Quadri recommended the formation of a committee to coordinate plans for
improvements to the Ed Taylor Trail. Committee will consist of Dr. Freedman,
Ken Bauer, Commissioners Carbon and Cady, and Director Quadri. The first meet-
ing will be held on May 10 at 10 a.m. Committee will meet at the Adeline entrance
of Mills Canyon and take a walk through the Canyon.
1509 Sanchez - Director Quadri informed Commission of request to plant palm trees
in planting strip at 1509 Sanchez. Resident cemented the whole area around new
home including the City's front easement. The City is requiring resident to
remove cement on City's easement. Director Quadri informed Commission that palm
trees are not on the approved street tree list and that it would take Commission

approval for resident to plant palm trees. Commissioner Gilmore moved that the
planting of palm trees at 1509 Sanchez be denied; seconded. Motion was carried
unanimously and request was denied.
OLD BUSINESS
P.G.&E Trimming of Sycamores - Council has requested the Beautification Commission
submit a recommendation on sycamore pruning by P.G.&E. There are several alter-
natives to consider 1) Continue the current program of sycamore pruning;
2) Prune all sycamores at equal height; or 3) Pollarding of all sycamores.
Director Quadri presented maps with areas marked of examples of different prun-
ing techniques used throughout the City. Commissioners were asked to inspect
the various areas before the June meeting, at which time they will review costs,
safety considerations, and potential for disease of the various methods. It
was emphasized that any Commission recommendation must be received by Council
for action well in advance of the next pruning season, which begins in late
October.
1985-86 Budget - Commission reviewed budget for 1985-86. Commissioner Carbon
would— like to the Department's youth employment program cut in half and for
the monies instead to be spent on updated equipment, i.e. trucks, computers, etc.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 7:15 P.M. -
