June 5, 1986
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order
on Thursday, June 2, 1986 at 5:35 p.m. in the City Hall by Chairman Hagstrom.

Present: Chairman Hagstrom, Commissioners Cady, Carbon,Erickson, Gilmore, and
Hughes.
Absent: Commissioner Shevchuk

MINUTES
Minutes of the May 1, 1986 meeting were approved with the following correction:
"The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission . . . by Chair-
man Hagstrom."
CORRESPONDENCE
Letter from Alan Kazarian, 1523 Vancouver Ave. requesting permission to remove a
designated Heritage tree because the tree "is growing into the foundation of my
hourse, causing considerable damage."
REPORTS
QUADRI - Tree at 1101 Cambridge has been removed because of DED. Large limbs
were removed at 1113 Cambridge in an experiment to see if that would control the
spread of the disease.
The renovated S.P. station will be dedicated on June 14 @ 2:00 p.m. during Art In
The Park weekend.
HAGSTROM - Median on ECR between Ray Drive and Trousdale has litter and needs
watering.
CARBON - Tree at corner of Adeline and Hillside Dr. (on Hillside) has a potentially
hazardous hanger. Director Quadri will notify the County.
Skyline Blvd. is in need of cleanup -- Director Quadri will organize a work crew
with the Sheriff's parole crew.
Davey Tree did an "excellent" job on the Eucalyptus trees at Skyline.
GILMORE - Finished Clean Campus Inspections. Taylor Intermediate won by 1 inspec-
tion. An engraved plaque will be presented to Taylor at the Graduation ceremonies
on June 13th.
As a way of creating enthusiasm toward the Clean Campus competition the committee
is planning pictures in September with Commissioners from each school, principals,
and Commissioners from both Beautification Commissions. Articles and pictures will
be submitted to local newspapers.
As a way of informing the public as to the functions of the Beautification Commis-
sion, Commissioners could write an article each month to be submitted to the loca
newspaper.,
ERICKSON - Commissioner Erickson was asked by the Kiwanis Club to arrange to have
someone from the Beautification Commission speak at their June 23rd meeting. Chair-
man Hagstrom will not be available so Commissioner Gilmore has volunteered to
speak.
Litter has not been removed from fenced area between Hughes gas station and Lucky.
�.- Commissioner Erickson suggests a letter be sent to the owner. Commission agreed.
Commissioner Carbon indicated that there is still an oil slick on ECR coming from
same gas station. Director Quadri will check.

OLD BUSINESS
Tree Removal/967 Chula Vista Resident requests removal due to damage to sidewalk
and sprinkler system. Commission inspected area. Director Quadri indicated that
sidewalk would be repaired by Public Works department at no charge to resident.
Commissioner Gilmore moved that request for removal be denied; seconded. Motion
carried unanimously.
Tree Removal/300 Lexington - Resident requests permission to remove and replace a
City Sycamore tree located on a "contiguous portion" of resident's property. Com-
mission inspected area. Tree is nearly on residents property on a side alleyway.
Commissioner Carbon moved to allow removal and replacement at owners expense;
seconded. Motion was unanimous.
1986-1987 Budget Review - Director Quadri asked for questions or comments; City
Manager has approved preliminary budget. Following a brief discussion, Commission
approved the 1986-1987 budget.
NEW BUSINESS
Heritage Tree Removal/1523 Vancouver - A Coral tree was planted in 1927 close to
the foundation of the house. Recently, tree has started to raise the foundation.
Resident requests permission to remove designated Heritage tree to protect the
investment in his property. Director Quadri submitted pictures of tree to Com-
mission and requested that Commission render a decision based on the pictures.
Commissioner Erickson moved that resident be given a permit to remove the Heritage
tree; seconded. Motion carried unanimously..
The July 3rd Beautification Commission meeting will be cancelled due to the holi-
day , and conflict with Burlingame Night at the Giants.
Appointment of Landscape Award Committee - Chairman Hagstrom appointed Commis-
sioners Erickson, Gilmore, and Shevchuk to select nominees for the 1986 Landscape
Award.
Meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
