HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - BC - 1986.02.06BURLINGAME BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION February 6, 1986 The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order on Thursday, February 6, 1986 at 5:35 p.m. in the City Hall by Vice Chairman Hagstrom. ROLL CALL Present: Commissioners Cady, Erickson, Gilmore, Hagstrom, Hughes, and Shevchuk. Absent: Commissioner Carbon Staff: Director Quadri MINUTES Minutes of the January 2, 1986 meeting were approved as submitted. Memo from City Manager requesting commission attendance reports from July 1 to December 31, 1985. Letter(s) from the City Council to Commissioner(s) Bowling and Disco, thanking them for their service on the Beautification Commission. At the next commissioners' dinner they will be recognized for their service to the City. Letter(s) from the City Council to Ardith Erickson and Dorothea Hughes advising them of their appointment to the Beautification Commission for a term continuing to October 7, 1988. Letter(s) from Director of Parks, Richard P. Quadri to newly appointed commissioner(s) Erickson and Hughes advising of the meeting dates and time for the Beautification Commission. Letter from Rector Cadillac confirming conversation re the removal of Eucalyptus trees on east side of lot. Letter from Paul Dimech, 1132 Rhinette requesting removal of 25' acacia. Letter and $100 donation from the Garden Study Club o/t Peninsula to be used for the purchase of trees to be planted during Arbor Day celebration. Letter and map inviting each elementary and intermediate school to send representatives to the 100 block of Anita Road by Washington Elementary School to plant a tree at the Arbor Day Ceremonies on March 5, 1986 at 10:00 a.m. REPORTS - Quadri Mr. Dimech, 1132 Rhinette. has requested permission to remove an acacia tree at the above address. Commission will review and render a decision at the next commission meeting in March. A Locust tree at 32 Arundel went down during a storm on February 3. 1986. Roots had been cut for sidewalk/street excavation but a trench was left unfilled by contractor causing it to fill with water and the S%.. tree eventually uprooting and falling over. No damage occurred to private property. The Council accepted the Commission's decision to remain with the cur- rent Sycamore pruning program and to further investigate a long range replacement program with P.G.&E. Director Quadri reported that in addition there are several areas that will be tested with growth retardants. Director Quadri stressed that this will be a long range program with effects not immediately noticed. The Commissioners' Dinner will be held at the Marriott Hotel on March 21. Invitations will be forthcoming. The Clean Campus committee has designed a `critique' sheet to assist the committee during inspections of campuses. Taylor Intermediate won the January inspection. Commissioner Erickson volunteered to help with inspections. Cady - The lights on the trees on Burlingame Avenue looks very nice. Shevchuk The center divide at Broadway and Rollins Road looks terrible. Director Quadri reported that the area is scheduled for some changes with the center divide being done at that time; and that rather than landscaping, patterned paving will be used. Hughes - �- Expressed her `delight' to serve on the commission after having served for almost one year on the temporarily combined Park, Recreation, and Beautification Commission. Erickson - Stated that she is `excited' about serving on the Beautification Com- mission. Hagstrom - The Broadway post office area is still looking bad: trash and old newspaper racks are still a problem. OLD BUSINESS The Spring Garden Seminar will be on March 8. 1986. from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Some possible topics will be `gardening in confined spaces' and herbal gardening. The Commission will supply cookies, cups, napkins, etc.. Details will be discussed at the next commission meeting on March 6, 1986. NEW BUSINESS The Commission Powers & Duties was distributed for review to be dis- cussed at the next meeting. Director Quadri stressed that contrary to the title, the Commission is primarily a `Tree' commission. Meeting was adjourned by Vice -Chairman Hagstrom at 6:32 p.m. Recording Secretary, --1 ^-
