Chamber of Commerce/Karen Key VII. FROM THE FLOOR rG DEC 2 December 21, 1987 Beautification Commission c/o Mrs. Jeannie Gilmore City of Burlingame 501 Primrose Road Burlingame, CA 94010 Dear Mrs. Gilmore: Recently Mr. Erich Langevin and Mr. Frank Agamau, of the Park and Sewer Departments, came out to check our property with regards to the problem we are having with one of the city's trees. They told us to write this letter to inform you that we want the tree in question removed completely due to the damage it is causing to the sewer line (our neighbor's property) and to our driveway. As you can see from the attached letter, this tree has done extensive damage to our property and the half -way measures that have been attempted . by the city to cure the problem have not worked. We presently cannot open our garage door at all and we do regard that door as an alternate means of exit in case of an emergency. In the past, we had to shave the door's bottom to allow it to open, but the problem has grown worse and must be solved permanently. ?Je are requesting your committee to come out and look at our property and then issue a permit for the tree's removal and the repair of our driveway at the city's expense. November 12, 1987 Mr. Rich Langevin Assistant park Director Park Corporation Yard 501 Primrose Road Burlingame, CA 94010 Dear Xr. Langevin: A few years ago I contacted the Park Department with regard to the fact that our garage door would not open because the roots from my neighbor's tree had uprooted our garage pavement. After several calls to your department, men were sent out and what they did was to go down approximately 18 inches and cut the roots that were near my pavement. When I asked about the damage to the garage pavement, I was told that it was our responsibility and not the City of Burlingame. To be perfectly frank, my husband and I were quite upset with this comment because if it were not for this tree, which belongs to the City of Burlingame, we would not be having this problem. Over the years, more cracks have appeared on the driveway and are now leading towards my walkway and to the foundation of my house. (I'm sure if this happened to your property you would also be upset). Fortunately we made no improvement at that time, because as mentioned above, we are having the same problem and more cracks. We actually cannot even think of making improvements until this matter is taken care of permanently. We know that the City of Burlingame is known for the beautification of its trees, however, when trees become dangerous, destructful and quite an eyesore, it seems that some important measure has to be taken. For example, because of the tree on our property, the roots get into our pipes and we must have the Roter-Rooter come out at least twice a year, so that we do not have any back-ups. 'Ke've had to put an outside back-up unit, because of this problem. What I am getting at, is that we are maintaining this problem, and perhaps the City of Burlingame should be doing it. Ilso, if we do not contact the Park Department, no one ever comes to trim the trees. I've lived here 16 years and the only time something has been done to my tree and my neighbor's is when we have called. It would seem to be that the City should maintain the trees, etc. I think we have both been very patient over the years, and riow it is time for the City of Burlingame to look into this matter quite seriously. We await an answer from you very soon. Sincerely', Gijj - L( • yypp Mrs. AlexanderOselpoff 16L5 Balboa tray Burlingame, CA 9hOlO P.S.
