MEMO
TO: RICHARD QUADRI, PARK DIRECTOR
FROM: FRANK ERBACHER, CITY ENGINEER
DATE: MAY 6, 1987
RE: STREET AND SIDEWALK DAMAGES
FARRINGDON LANE AREA
I have reviewed the letters from the residents and the pictures
submitted of the tree -related damage to curb, gutters, sidewalks and
driveways. I have also sent my sidewalk inspector to look at the
area again to measure some of the problems. There are some very
rough areas of immediate concern, especially those having driveway
access difficulties.
The Public Works Department will be instructed to remove those
driveway areas which restrict the vehicular access and replace them
temporarily with asphalt. Also, those areas where pedestrians walk
that need removal or patching will have asphalt patch work, as
needed, done as a temporary measure. Funding for concrete sidewalk,
. curb and gutter repairs is now at $250,000 to $350,000 per year.
This particular area is now programmed for fiscal year 188/89
provided work in the currently programmed areas for '87/88 does not
run significantly higher than estimated costs. Permanent repairs are
therefore expected to be performed in 188/89.
I hope this memo will answer the concerns of those who wrote.

Ladies and Gentelmen:
This is to bring to your attention a very frustrating and recurring
problem with a number of large trees on Farringdon Lane that are causing
serious damages. I own the property loacated at"732 Farringdon Lane, presently
occuped by a tenant, and I wanted to write this letter to elicit your support
and assistance in resolving this costly and hazardous problem.
At the outset I would like for you to know that I take more than a
casual "landlord's" interest in Burlingame. Burlingame is very dear to us all
as I have been a resident there for over seventeen years. My parents, brothers
and their families live and have businesses in Burlingame and have been
residents there for just as long. About two and half years ago I moved to
Santa Clara as my employer (Hewlett Packard) moved from Palo Alto to San Jose.
I share in your committment to keep Burlingame beautiful. We have a deep
respect for the beauty, serenity and cleanliness of Burlingame and certainly do
keep this in mind always.
The crux of the problem is a number of very large and old trees
around my house. Specifically, two very large ones in front of the house, one
large palm tree in front of the entry door, and another large palm tree to the
north side of the house between us and our neighbor. I am sure you are well
aware of the kind of problems these trees create as Well as the serious hazard
they represent. Let me enumerate a few of the key ones:
1. House Foundation
The tree roots have found there way to underneath the house
and to the foundation and are causing cracks on the walls.
Driveway
Our concrete driveway is a mess with very large cracks. We have
repaired these several times but the cracks definitely reoccur.

3. Sidewalk/Curb
Again very large cracks are all over the sidewalk.. This creates
a serious hazard to passers by who invariably will stumble on them and someday
will seriously hurt themselves.
4. Sewer Main Lines
The strong roots of these have found their way to the sewer
lines and cause periodic headaches. I regularly have to call Roto-Rooter
people at great expense and inconvenience have the lines cleared.
S. Mess from the trees
The two large trees in front of the house drop large and non stop
quantities of very hard dark: brown "pricky" balls. They are a constant problem
as people are tripping over them, they go into neighbors rose garden and
continually have to be picked up. The palm trees are not any better as they
drop the long dried leaves.
6. Lawn Maintenance and Tree Roots
It's impossible for me to keep the lawn green and well taken care
of. The trees in front of the house have also surface roots that are visible
on the front lawn. Watering the lawn makes the trees grow. I have made
several failed attempts to cut these away but new ones prop up.
The above is not a complete list but certainly ought to give you a
good feel for the frustration, financial burden and the safety hazard that I am
continually faced with because of these trees. I request that you give serious
consideration to the complete removal of these trees. I would certainly be
willing to share in any expenses and of course committ to replanting new,
less damaging trees. I am not the only one who feels this way on the block and
I suspect that you might hear or have heard from others in the neighborhood.
Should you need to get in touch with me I can be reached at 408-435-6282.
Thank you and regards,
Sincerely,
Ted A. Kevranian
